Nice pic in your avatar Mtcfish, Bluefin or ? I can't tell from the pic. 100lbs or more? jealousy is burning in me. When I finish my project I will have a standing offer of free fishing in the gulf California for stripped and black marlin, sailfish, dorado, wahoo, roosterfish, mexican white sea bass, yellowtail ( the amberjack family) and yellowfin tuna -lodging included for Bateau boat builders aboard my beast for fellow builders as long as they help with fuel costs. The same offer must be extended in thier own waters. I'm jealous of the salmon and halibut fishing, spokaloo? you up for it? , maybe redfish and those little speckled sea trout with Dougster in TX and maybe bluefish in the north east and tarpon, permit or white marlin with a Florida builder.....My personal list of salt water gamefish species caught and released is stuck on about 45. We should start a seperate thread about "trade offs" Anybody else game? The only problem is that when most builders "splash" they abandon the board to go fishing. i know I will. instead of having builders meets this could be a way to share common interests.

Those Boats I posted in my Album are the results of tens of thousands of hours of labor. By a team of highly skilled professional Craftsmen and extremely wealthly buyers with the genuine attitude of "Money is no object." That 18' cost over $80,000.00. I helped build it, I have plans to build a 21... realisticly I can't afford the time or materials, All I have is the willingness and skill. I have run the #'s every way imagineable and the best you could do (everything @ REAL wholesale) is about $22,783. And that is cutting corners you wouldn't like to cut in something so valueable, no additonal $ for labor (like Professional painting), and no engine.
Then there's the time issue. I'd think realisticly about how long it would take you devote 40 hrs to this boat, then times that by about 60 ( that's avg of 2 guys 40hrs/wk for about six monthes) thats about how long that 18 took.
Sorry to be such a downer, but I am currently very frusterated by this subject. They are something to respect for the simple reason they are so tough to afford. The bottm line is, if you can't afford to go out and buy one, you'll probably never finish one you start to build.

Bala, I've been thinking (dangerous I know). Anyway I think you should build a simple project first with your kids. Something in the 12-16 ft range bulletproof, safe, sturdy etc. Something that they could handle building as well as driving. They would get instant gratification because the build would come together quick. If you start a big project first they might loose interest. Then when the plans are finished start the mjm29- whatever that is- and when the mjm29 is finished if their grades are up give it to them- with conditions of course. It would be a great learning experience for them as well as yourself and keep the family together. Some of the best memories I have as a youngster are when my father taught me how to do something.

We fish out of san carlos/guaymas. Usually about 20-40nm out on a 180 course. I have a couple of friends down there that have boats so I go out with them. Trolling for marlin, sails, tuna and dorado is our usual game plan and we usually do very well. I'm saving vacation up so after I finish my project and get the bugs worked out i want to take a couple of weeks and cross to the santa rosalia/mulege area and then fish south till I'm out of time,money or burnt to a crisp.

You are also welcome to come try your hand at some Musky and Lake Trout here or we can go east to what is considered the best bill fish site on the East Coast.
