GF14 Clamping Board dimensions

Post by mpmlaw »

I started work on my GF14 today. I am working on cutting out the frame parts from the 1/2" marine ply.

I am following the nesting drawings as included in the plans. The clamping board dimensions show that they should be 10-1/2" inches at their highest points. However, there is only a maximum of 7-3/4" of plywood left after cutting out all the other parts. I went ahead and traced the top of the transom over this 7-3/4" span and cut it out.

Has anyone else had this same issue? Does it really matter?

I appreciate any help or advise.

There should be enough plywood: I see a 1" margin on each side.

Check against you engine bolts. If it fits, it will be fine.

Thanks.

I'm sure it wasn't the plans, it was probably me. Anyway, I'm sure I can make it work.

Oops!!

I figured out what I did wrong. The seat frame that is shown above the clamping board has a recessed area for the seat cover. Instead of cutting the recess out of the whole sheet of plywood, I cut a straight line left to right along the highest points of the seat frame, thus, I cut out a large part of my clamping board with it.

Oh well, live and learn.

It's not technically wrong but it may cost you another sheet of plywood. Sorry.

I thought about a fix. The clamping board I cut is approx. 3"+/- shorter than it should be because of my goof.

However, since the clamping boards are sandwiched against the transom, why couldn't I cut a 3"+/- strip out of my leftover half-inch ply to make up for what is lacking and epoxy it to the transom at the bottom of the middle clamping board and then epoxy the correct-sized clamping board on top of that one?

Wouldn't that work?

Yes, that would work.
