PVC - Does epoxy bond to it?

Post by anonymous »

Wasn't sure where to post this. Jacques, feel free to move it to a more appropriate forum.

Anyway, I see that PVC tubing is used for various features on boats. Does the epoxy bond to the PVC tubing like it does to wood or is it just encasing it to hold it in place?

I'm thinking about using PVC or a small bucket to create a form but I'd like to remove the PVC/bucket after the epoxy cures. Suggestions?

Epoxy manufacturers say PVC can provide good adhesion, if surface prepartion is good. I presume this means degreasing and mild sanding.

Epoxy will not adhere generally to plastics which are impervious to solvents like acetone . I think stuff like polyprop, nylon fall in this class.

So the answer to your query-- epoxy will adhere to the PVC form.

You could coat the pvc form with a "release" agent.. a sheet of plastic ??

May require some "filling-in" or sanding to iron out the wrinkles, so to say.

A quick follow-up on the above..

West System epoxy archives has an article where they used Hair-Spray ( which contains the chemical PVA ) as a mold release agent.

Opens up very many intersting possibilities !!!!!!!!!
