cape man wrote:Thanks Mike. I checked it for crystals (read that on the site I found), but didn't look for tiny crystals. It's in a 4 gallon metal can, but has a plastic pull-out spout. I'll throw it in the truck tomorow and park in the sun. It is curing just as you describe. Stays soft and a bit tacky. Will be great if I can use it. Did I say I was a cheap SOB?
The crystals would be very fine. Like sand. if you take some of the resin, and rub it between your fingers, you would feel a fine grit. 4 gallons bouncing around in the back of a pickup, in the southern heat should do the trick.

from one cheap SOB to another.... 4 gals of free epoxy is a great deal!

Was busy this morning...(kinda)...

Here's what the chase tubes looked like with the foam from last night.

Image

And here's what the barn looked like from the boil over! Camera flash took a dump, but if you look close you can see it all over the side of the freezer and on the floor beyond. Missed my drill!

Image

Me thinks I mixed too much... Gonna paint this a bright color and use it as a marker bouy while fishing.

Mixed some epoxy with thickened with wood flour and after removing the excess foam and sanding the areas around the chase tubes (including the base of the tubes themselves) filled in all the holes. No water going through here!

or here...

Put the epoxy my friend gave me in front of a space heater all morning as well. Was weird turning that thing on in the barn!

Image

I tried another small test batch, coating, wetting in, and mixing with the blended filler. Will report later.

Here's my next step and question:

I have a too large gap between the sole and sides in the rear sections. What best to fill? The distance between the upper edge of sole and side is a full inch at the worst spot, and the gap between the lower edge and the side is about 1/2 inch.

Cut a piece of wood? I played around with rolling up some scrap cloth and shoving it in. Was going to fill this with thickened epoxy and then build my fillets on top of it.

Finally, for those who don't get the pleasure of living with Armadillos, here's a sample of what they do. This was all done last night after I went to bed.

Looking good! You aren't fooling around!

I had a few spots like that also. A result of the stringers being 1/2" higher than designed, I think.

I think that would waste gallons of that free epoxy. Do you have any more foam left after the explosion :P

Image

I CAREFULLY mixed SMALL batches of foam, and poured it along the edges where the gaps were wide. Then trimmed it off to the bottom of the sole level. Filled the little 1/2" ditch with thickened epoxy. I made the first pour level with the sole, then fillet and tape over it. Just like our chase tubes

I know we all love and enjoy the 2-part foam :D but for the gap filling, how about use the spray can of foam gap filler from Home Depot to fill the bottom of the gap as Larry was suggesting? It's not USCG but it would be quick and easy.

Man are you reading my mind or what!? I was searching to see if the canned stuff is closed cell or not. Don't need much, and I am rockin' and rolling! Could get back on it in an hour if I can use that stuff as our local hardware is 5 minutes from the house.

I agree with Larry. Do not shove glass in there, it will just soak up all the resin, and you're free epoxy will be gone before you know it.

I had a similar issue with mine and I filled the area as best I could with thickened epoxy. It's OK, but probably wasted about 1/2 gallon of resin :(

Definately go with the foam in there, then trim and create filets and tape above. I'm not sure about the HD foam being closed cell, but you're essentially just using it to create a "shelf" so that the epoxy doesn't pour through to the sole ;)

I agree with Mike, for that little bit I think the HD spray cans would work fine.

Figured you were out of 2 part foam

Craig, the boat is looking great :!: Looks like you are on your way to a launch soon. I got a few things that I will go through from the build that you might be interested in. I think I got some rope that you might be able to use, good stuff. Gave some to Larry when he visited a couple of months ago.

I am going to go out on Sunday morning if you are interested. Let me know. Bones said I have a growth on my ACL that will require surgery. I want to go fishing this weekend as I may be laid up for awhile. I think you have my number.

Richard
