Flat botomed GV13

Post by Mike Redmond »

Good morning,I have been looking for a different boat plan for a bit now.My fantasy would be a boat along the lines of a GV13+a foot or two and also something along your jon boats: But with a flat bottom for most of the boat and with a bow that comes up in a moderate vee like the GV's but not at such a tight angle. They make those in aluminum but I have yet to see them in wood.I have built the GV11 from plans on this site, and I got a lot of help and answers for my questions wicth I very much appreciated. The GV was a good little boat ..but it didnt suit my needs,,,I beach my boats all the time and have to carry the outboard to the transom,,,it got to be a harduous task for me because the boat just wanted to rock thats why I am looking for something with a flat bottom,,,Ive had 2 John boats before, and they were quite stable (still own a 12 footer with a slow up turn to the bow) BUT when the going gets rough, each time you hit a wave is like running into a brick wall(guess thats why the tin boat builders came up with the idea of a flat bottomed jon boat with a moderate vee up front. So if anyone has seen plans of the kind please let me know.....Maybe Jaques can come up with something along those lines.... PS bought a set of plans from Glen L, cant get any adequate answers for my questions, boat wont get built ,and wont ever purchase plans there again; lesson learned stay with a group that knows what they are talking about,,,,,Thanks for reding me Mike Redmond

Mike look at the OD16, you could shorten it by a foot or more and make it narrower if you want to do that. I think if you did that you would have what you are looking for, 10% would be 14'10".

Close but not it ,to big, and the boat is a sharpie I like the bow of the garvey better, wider entrance to the boat.Where I use them theres no docks, launching ramp is just a clearance in the forest so that you dont have to pull your boat through the trees...thats why I dont want it too wide yet not to slim either...60 inch beam is pretty much the max for me and the 48 inch flat bottom is for steadiness, not getting any younger, and not as steady on my legs as I used to be.... The problem in building a hull like you describe is you can't make the wood go from a flat bottom to a v bow without bending the material a lot. You can do this with thin aluminum that is only 0.10" thick (or less), but it is much harder (o.k. virtually impossible) with plywood.

When I was mentioning flat GV 13 was more or less a general idea. You dont necessarily have to bend the ply to make the a wave cutting curve,to cite a couple of examples check out Jim Michalacks Allans boat and Twang, odd looking boats, but in the general idea of what I'm looking for.I am not adept or knowledgeable enough with boat design to mess with his plans. All that's missing is the Garvey style bow and that would,or should be close to it: but I dont posess these plans ,and I have a preference for boats that have a squarish bow for ease of exit and entry;and a flat bottom for stability.Just thought I could the mention the idea over here, to find out if someone could come up with a concept that would fit my idea of a versatile fishing Garvey with a flat bottom and a wave cutter molded in it, someday maybe...... Mike

Mike, when a flat bottom boat is running, it is only running on the last few feet of the hull. The bow configuration is really irrelevant.

This is my GF16 running at Crystal river with me at the helm and TomW up front. I weigh 200. Tom weighs a little more maybe.

Notice where the boat is actually riding. The bow area is not contacting the water at all. We just ran in from the gulf where there was a 2-3' chop and I barely changed throttle setting all the way.

A V bow would not change the ride at all if the bottom is flat. Only at displacement speed would it matter at all, and then not significantly

The GF14 or 16 will do anything you want, and you'll be happy with it  Pointing the bow and V-ing the front section of the bow would be a lot of work for little or no gain IMO.
