Am just about ready to epoxy and cloth the exterior hull. Should I try to keep the transom attached, or do separately ? I assume that the pieces (50in. wide) are run longetudinally , with a lap over the keel that projects perhaps 2 in. past furthest edge of keel tape ?Thanks, Leif

You are scaring me: are you really thinking of removing the transom before fiberglassing or are you joking?<BR>Or do you mean fiberglassing the transom separately?<BR><BR>Fiberglass lengthwise, all over with 2" overlap as we say on the plans.<BR><BR>PS: does that mean that your hull is planked? If yes, congratulations, it´s a big step. Any pictures?

"Should I try to keep the transom attached?"<BR><BR>This is what scares us. Before you cover your hull (all over) with glass cloth, the hull (sides bottoms and transom) should be a solid wood structure held tightly together at chine, keel and transom edge permanently with biaxial tape and epoxy. Not something that you would have to "try <!-- BBCode Start --><I>too hard</I><!-- BBCode End --> to keep attached" hopefully. It better darned well be attached already! <IMG SRC="images/forum/icons/icon_eek.gif"> <BR><BR>Jim

This time I am not the only one to be confused.<BR>Jim, you are correct but I think (hope) that Leif was talking about covering the bottom AND the transom with one piece of fiberglass. <BR>In that case, no, do it with two pieces please.<BR>First, it would be difficult in one piece, second, I like the overlap there: another reinforcement that we count on.

Oow I´m scared, guys ! To think of removing that transom after all that taping and fairing, yikes !!! Of course, I´m the guy who didn`t know how to mix glue! Anyway, Jacques, you discerned that my question was concerning glassing the hulland transom, versus glassing the hull separately from the transom . Your answer makes good sense to me, and serves to remind me that experienced boatbuilder I am(Ihave after all planked my boat ), there´s a long way to go , both in my knowledge and the boatbuilding. I do notice that procedures are taking way less time than they did even a week ago. Thank you for your appreciation of the current state of this beautiful Ob17 . My son has been taking pictures and when I can figure how to post them , I will . Thanks again. Leif.
