Mangusta 20 down under - Which plywood ?

Post by Beeftech »

The plans for the Mangusta 20 specify 6 mm plywood. In Oz I can only get 4 mm or 7 mm ply. Am I better to go 4 mm and add addition glass layers or go 7 mm with specified glass layers?

Off the top of my head I would say go with the 7mm. Really a big difference between 4mm and 6mm for a boat of that size and type. It would sure be cheaper and lighter to go with the 7mm. If there are any bending issues with the 7mm you could cut kerfs into the 7mm to ease the bending. I'm surprised you don't have access to 6mm. Maybe someone from your area will chime in with a local source.

7mm is fine and has been used by others. The sizing of 1/4" or 6mm as 7mm varies my location. 1/4" is 6.35mm. This discussion has occurred many times.

go with the 7mm :!: Normally there is a big difference between 4mm and 6mm in terms of number of ply's. Your 7mm probably has 5 plys.

My 2 cents worth... 4mm will give you a REAL headache when fairing, it will not follow contours as neatly as 7mm.

That's a really good point. Something I've thought about while fairing 6mm bottoms on some of my builds. Especially the flat planing surfaces of the bottom.

Build it quickly and post a ton of pictures, it's one of the boats I would really like to build myself.
