Hey Alan, I'm in the Fredericksburg area planning to build either a gv15 or gf16 this spring/summer, although currently I'm looking to see if there's any plans for a snowmobile on the site.

There's a few builds going on in the Richmond area, and I'm sure I remember seeing a few people in the beach area on here. I built a kayak last year just to get some experience working with the materials and had a lot of fun and learned quite a bit for the next build. Anyway, just wanted to check, in since we're not too far from each other, and say good luck getting going with a build.

Hey Brandon,
That's exactly where I am at this point. I received a note from a builder in Georgia who is moving to the D.C. area and is willing to help in a limited way. I have built many buildings in several different countries as well as on the East Coast area, but I never had much experience with something more in line with cabinet work. I have seen it noted that "no previous experience " is required. I'll let you know should I find out about a project in the area. I would definately enjoy/ appreciate seeing a work in progress.

Hi Rick,
Would love to see first hand the start of a build. Your area is close enough for a "field trip". Also willing to lend a hand. Please let me know as details of your project progress. SNOW... We had our share and you've had even more... It would have been a great time to have had a boat started to work on this winter. thanks again for the note.

Hello, I'm in VA, Colonial Heights to be exact, 20 min south of Richmond, My fs17 build is near complete, but I know of 2 other builders in the area, one building a DE25 and one a Garvey16, The Garvey builder goes by "Murry" on the forum and has a thread under "builders power boats" I have met him personally and he is a great guy.
The De25 builder I have not seen a thread from on the forum, but he has a gallery, I have talked to him on the phone and he was a very nice fellow.
I am a first time builder with no woodworking/carpentry/fiberglass experience , however with the help of this forum I think I have done a good job :) , you cannot ask too many questions, read everything you can, follow the building plans and the building notes of the plan you intend to build and you'll do fine.

willing to offer help,
Daniel

I am near C'ville, built a V12 and am currently building a cheap canoe, and am finishing up a total rebuild.
I don't build pretty, just functional. If it's pretty, I don't want to scratch it up :D

I love the look of the HM19. What is your intended use for the boat? I am assuming you are planning on using this boat in the coastal waters of Jacksonville, NC versus the inshore (lake/pond) waters of Charlottesville. :)

Hello again Brandon,
I have access to the water at Lake Monticello near Charlottesville. Probably a big enough body of water for a test run. Yes, I do plan to use the boat in N.C. My son-in-law is stationed at Camp Lejune. Within the base, there are two marinas that are easy access to the ocean by way of the New River. There also is a launch area at Onslow Beach on base that is right on the intercoastal waterway. The ocean is accessible from that point as well
My uncles were watermen on the lower James River and had oyster/ fishing boats that looked similar to the HM19, though probably a bit larger. I have a difficult time visualizing the size of the HM19. One reason that I'd love to see that model up close. I may want to do the DE23 instead. I see that "Uncle Ralph" in Maryland somewhere has the HM19, but I'm not certain how to contact him. I'm guessing that he wouldn't mind showing his boat to a perspective builder.
How's work on the snow mobile???

Hi Alan,

I'm in Williamsburg. I built a Panga 22 last winter, ran it this summer, and it is now back in the shop. I'm about complete fairing the sides and interior, hope to prime and paint in March, and put the motor back on in April. If you're down this way and want to stop by let me know.

I spent a lot of time in C'ville '96 - '03. My two boys played ball there.

Rex/Other,

I was just wondering if anyone in the area knew where to get Meranti locally (or Okoume).

Hey Alan, if I start a build this Spring you're more than welcome to come hel...er....see the start of it ;) Between work, spring turkey, kayak trips, and my possible new metal detecting hobby, don't know how I'm going to get started, but we'll see. I'm sure I'll figure a way to fit some boat building in.
