Rub rail for PH 16
Rub rail for PH 16
We've been looking to purchase rub rails for our PH 16, but they seem to be hundreds of dollars for the plastic/plastic tube type. We don't really want to make our own out of wood, but has anyone seen some available for purchase that are more reasonably priced? Thanks. Todd

Did you look at Surplusunlimited.com yet? Saw 2 rub rail kits on there for around $100. Haven't seen any cheaper than that so far.

Hmmmm you might want to re-consider wood I found a great type/class of moulding at homedepo for my boat it took 2 pieces for anything larger you'll go a few feet more then what I got

is a picture of the moulding I used for the rubrail it btw was two 16' sections which bent around the boat with nary a creak it was applied with about 6 screws and fileting blend on each side then the top portion which was square the moulding is L shaped was reenforced with a filet of thickened epoxy to cut down the squareness of the top and to soften the look of it I'll take a pic of the inside/top later but I think that you will be quite pleased with this as a solution
I am very happy with Kevlar covered wood rub rails on mine. They can take quite a smack w/o any damage except some paint and the S3 paint is easy to touch up. You can get 50 yds of 1" 5oz kevlar tape for $50 which would give you 4 layers. If you hit hard enough to go thru that the rub rail is the least of your worries.
Thanks for the tips. Doug, we were intrigued early on by your construction of the Kevlar rub rails (as well as your hatches) when we first reviewed your Web site. At this point, my girlfriend is demanding that we get our craft out of her garage and into the water ASAP, so we thought a prefab rub rail would take less time.
Todd, I purchased my Rub Rail for my PH16 at Hamilton Marine. They have a huge selection. I bought the rail material that did not have the rubber inserts. The insert railings were more expensive. I purchased a solid rail about 2 1/2" which actually curves over the top deck by about 3/8 of a inch. (The railing reminds me of the same type of material that is on a escalator handrail). This gave the deck a nice finished look to it and I also got a toe rail out of it . ( I think this will also help to keep the fly line on the deck on windy days). I counter sunk the screws into the railing with a all in one drill bit.
Kurt: I checked their Web site. http://www.hamiltonmarine.com/Rubrail.html
Wow! What a selection. That looks like the solution we've been looking for. Thanks. Todd
