dumbest builder ever???

Post by rikmoor »

So what I discovered tonight tells me 1 of 2 things - either I am the dumbest builder ever or the only one honest enough to admit what I just found out I did...

So I am building the FL11 - I cut all the frames and sides about 3 weeks ago and have been waiting on my fiberglass/epoxy kit. Well it came in the mail and last night I decided that to get ready for a weekend of building, I would go do the butt blocks for the sides. I knew I didn't have much time, but wanted them to be fully cured for the weekend.

So I rush down to the garage, cut the butt block pieces, mix up my epoxy/hardener, lay the sides out and epoxy the butt blocks in place. Tonight I decided to go look at them, see how the blocks had cured, etc and realized that I had laid the sides out identical to each other...instead of mirror images of one another...so now when I stitch it together, one of the butt blocks will be on the...drum roll please...OUTSIDE!!! 8O

So it is with this that I come here tonight - for the verbal abuse I may take and to ask - is it better now to just buy new plywood and start one side over or is there some way I can get the butt block off the outside? In my fit of rage, I went ahead and butt blocked the other side tonight thinking maybe I could use a belt sander or grinder to get the other block off - but before I do that I decided to get some input here.

One thing I am glad to say, this is why I started to build with the FL11 first anyway - I wanted to learn the whole process, and make my mistakes, on this boat rather than the OB15 (next) or the CS23 (dream...)

Thanks for the :help:

Just think of it as Tuition for boat building school. Thats just the beginning. Believe me.

I think I did something like that also.

Rikmoor,
Start with a wide stiff putty knife to chisel a few layers of the but block away.
then find the coarsest belts for the belt sander. That if you used occume or similar. If you used inexpensive ply then spring for another sheet.
If you buildboats long enough things like this will happen.

Now that’s a neat trick. I suspect your not the first, just honest. Belt sander should fix that up nicely in a matter of minutes, likely need a bit of fairing mix on that when your done. You will know when your close to the original panel when the wood dust turns to resin dust.

Before I got to the punch line I had assumed you glued them to the floor.

Scott.

See this archived post in the old Plans and Building section titled "The Dry Side":

Especially note Jacques reply to my post. It seems these kind of things happen to everyone.

I did it on a kayak prototype, don't feel bad. The job looks real good right up to the point when you gasp and yell HOLY*^&*%&**(*(%&^%

Belt sand it and we'll keep it to ourselves.

No big deal, just a pain in the butt joint.

Take a pic and you can have a laugh at it later when you get the job done looking bright and sparlkling.

Hehehe... I had a butt joint in the way of a stringer. My best friend Mr. Beltsander took care of it in about 10 minutes! Used 80 grit paper. There really aren't mistakes here that will totally put you on land forever...they just tend to cost: time and money. But virtually anything is fixable I've found ;)

Rikmoor,

You're not alone my friend. I did the same thing with my OB15. Fortunately, I caught the problem in time (the epxoy hadn't set up yet) so I was able to flip it over & reglue. You can probably put a butt block on the other side & if you have a hand pl,aner, shave the old butt block off.
