Adding 6' to the Vagabond will change the design too much, imho. I think the Serpentaire is a more obvious candidate, since it has proven ocean-crossing abilities (Atlantic).

Good luck on your adventure!

common mistake of the beginners !!!!

Post by anonymous »

:D :) :D

Hi everyone:

Thanks for your advice and patient.

First: I believe is a common mistake of the beginners (me) to take a design and ask for many changes given as a result a different boat.

Second: I am a skilled amateur woodworker –but not boat builder- and I learned to trust in the instructions and/or specifications. Therefor I don’t ask more for modifications.

Third: The carefully direction of this forums and his members provide a lot of wisdom or teach the basics: one, two, three, at least for me.

Four: The V23 is an excellent sailboat bout I realize she is not for solo circumnavigation, at least not for safe and comfortable one.

Five: I want to buy the plain kit but I am a little cautious I need to look pictures and heard about a real one, yet finished. I want she for coastal and Mexico Gulf voyages and training and learning.

Six: My next post is about looking for a place in NYC, a cheaper (or free) winter space for building boats.

I am sorry I did not realize Jacques posted my first letter, thanks again.

Congratulations Mertens!!!

Sincerely Miguel

Where did you read that? The Serpentaire was also not designed for that purpose, she was designed for club racing but at least 50 crossed the Atlantic and at least two circumnavigated. The VG23 is a serious improvement on the Serpentaire and she can do all what a Serpentaire can do but better.
Bottom line, if you want a minimum boat to circumnavigate, the VG23 is a fine choice.
It is an exciting project that I had when I was 18. I never realized it but sailed several boats half around the world, from the Indian Ocean and Med to the South Atlantic and all kind of other places like the North Sea.
You choose the right approach: get used to the boat in coastal waters first then increase your range. Doing that, you will discover that a 23 footer is very small and will require some serious sacrifcies in comfort but when I was young, I didn't care to be wet and uncomfortable, maybe the VG23 will work. If not, sell her and build a bigger one: it is a good way to progress towards a bigger boat.

I don't remember posting your message but you emailed and, as usual, we asked you to post your question on the message board.
My response is still the same: I recommend a larger boat in the 27' range.

I don’t read that I thought “The V23 is an excellent sailboat bout I realize she is not for solo circumnavigation at least not for safe and comfortable one”

That is the point: at least not for safe and comfortable one but also I read and agree with you :

My back could kill me in a long solo, I am not a young neither a older man.

Anyway I will buy the V23 but for different goals.

We still are searching for a god boat in the range of 27’ 29’. The goal is a boat for a Project Team Construction Sail Boat for Solo Circumnavigation.

We know what we need: We are looking for some one who fits in our necessities no a boat for modify around our necessities

Maybe could be your next V27 or V28? When you launch that kit?

Best regards

Miguel

A 27' sailboat design? 8O :D I can't wait to see how she looks.

Although, I've already convinced myself that the VG23 is the best trailerable seaworthy boat that I may be capable of completing. Hopefully I'll be able to realize a VG23 project (dream) while I'm still a young boatbuilder
