I have been checking online at bateau to order a sail for my ongoing D5. It now says "out of stock". What is up? Will I have to go somewhere else to get my sail?

d5 sail? Out of stock
Our mistake, sorry.
All (or almost all) sails are made on order and it usually takes between 4 and 6 weeks to get one but is is worth the wait.

V10 Sails
I plan to sew my own sail, if for no other reason I've built everything else from scratch. So here are a few questions:
Can I take the panels from the plan and loft directly from them?
Are the basic sewing techniques described in Sailmakers Apprentice, or is there a distilled Bateau.com version?
I note I have the 2 page handout on how to rig the sprit sail and that is very useful.
Do I need a special sewing machine to sew the 4 oz Dacron?

The Sailmakers Apprentice book will tell you everything:

Yes, you need a special sewing machine plus a press for the eyelets.

My machine will sew 4 layers of packcloth. It was the only performance criteria. It does that easily. I have not used a real heavy gage thread but will try it. You might make a test run with your machine. Might do the job depending on how you have to lap the seams. I'm counting on the Sailmakers Apprentice for Christmas. Probably get another Reindeer sweater. Anybody need a sweater??

Sewing machines for sails are special for a number of reasons, but here are a few I know about:
1) They have to be able to penetrate the thick coated material
2) They have to be able to firmly grip both cloths so the panels remain in alignment, or bubbles will result.
3) They should be able to zigzag sew multiple seams simultaneously as most sails require double or triple stitching.
There are probably more things as well. At sailrite.com, you can buy new or used machines.
