Hello,
I just bought plans for a Panga 22. The labor estimate in the study plans says something like 50 hrs for the hull and suggests 50 more hrs for a workable finished product. I’ve got lots of irons in the fire, but might have a 50 hour window in a few weeks to get the hull done, leaving another 50 or so to do piecemeal through the summer. Is that a reasonable amount of time, or are the suggested time requirements a pipe dream? I have lots of handyman experience, and I’ve worked in boatyards and on my own vessels doing fiberglass work more than I care to remember. I bought the plans hoping the time guidelines were nearly accurate, but I see some people work lovingly on these things for ages. I don’t require a perfectly finished vessel, just a strong work boat; rough-done is fine. I know it’s impossible to know, but educated guesses would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance for any input.
Steve

Re: Panga 22 build time
Remember the 50 hours does not include time waiting for epoxy to cure. That's pretty much just time to measure, cut, set on the molds, and the actual time filleting, laying glass, etc.
Hours and Hours of sanding and many many overnights for epoxy to cure also factor in.

Thanks for the reply. Yes, it's 50h over a week or two, should be plenty of dry time. Oh, the dreaded sanding.

Welcome aboard
I hate to rain on your parade, but there ain't no likely chance you are going to build a Panga 22 in 50 hours, unless it's the ugliest Panga almost ever launched, even if we count Central America
I've built a few of these boats and I think that even rough finished you will have 2 or 3 times more hours than that in it.

Yep. You'll probably spend 50 hours or more just sanding it before you are throughYes, it's 50h over a week or two, should be plenty of dry time. Oh, the dreaded sanding.

Thanks for the input.
The 50 hours was for the hull, and I planned to spend another 50 finishing it up. But it sounds like I'll need 150 before it's all done at least. My wife won't like a boat half built in our small yard for too long, so I'll probably wait until fall when I can invest more time in one chunk.
Anybody else built one of these and have a guess?

Re: Panga 22 build time
You'll spend 50 hours just gluing the pieces together.I built one 3 years ago. I spent 400 hours on it the first winter, put a motor on it, and used it that summer. I wasn't embarrassed to run it, but it was a little rough. I spent 200 hours on it the next winter getting it fair. It is a now has perfect 8 to 10 foot "panga " finish.

Wow. Again, thanks so much for the input.
Re: Panga 22 build time
Double the price and quadruple the time.
Mine was triple the cost and took 6 months. In warm weather you have a better chance for a quicker cure. I could probably build the boat the second time around in better than half the time. You cannot hurry these things, as it could be costly.

Re: Panga 22 build time
I'm about to round 200 hours on my PH 18 and I haven't even started glassing the hull yet. I've been messing around in a wood shop ever since I could crawl so the wood working portion to me is really enjoyable. I kinda dread when it's all over because it's so much fun.
