widening the FS18...
I am just wondering how trouble it would be to give this boat an extra 8 to 12 inches of beam. Is it feasable? Practical? Worth even pondering? I am going to build th boat, hope to have plans ordered in a couple weeks. I will be using this boat for its intended purpose, just looking for maybe so added stability for when I take the wife or one of the kids. I hope to outfit it with a 25 etec, should be mean little boat. My build will be very similar to Hooter's boat.

What you propose would be a complete redesign. A box is a complex, multi-dimensional object, not just a box. It's really nor feasible nor practical. The nesting of parts would be ruined and take many more sheets of ply and it might not work out as well as you think.
From what I've heard (from people who have actually been on one) it is a very stable little boat as designed

Brink, Have you considered a low sheer FS 17? You could stretch it some if you needed the length.

Re: widening the FS18...
Pretty sure the FS18 would be a very different boat if built 15-20% wider. A big part of the performance is realized by the small water plane and light weight. As other have mentioned you'll require much more wood and a good deal of "figure it out" time to get it right. Think the FS17 low shear or a +10% stretch would be right on target. Stretching is very simple compared to increasing the beam and I imagine you'd have the support of the designer as well. Be prepared to step up the power if you stretch. I'm betting you'll need 40hp to be close to the FS18's numbers with it's 25. I'm happy with my 25hp FS17 but there are times I'd like the additional power for sure. Good luck no matter what you choose.

I agree woth taking a closer look at the FS17. If it's too wide or more boat than you want also look at the OB15/18

Thanks guys. Just thinking out loud. Better to do it now and get the question answered...

I agree with all those who propose the FS17 low sheer version.
The plans exist, the boat is well proven: Joel owns one.

Re: widening the FS18...
Thanks Jacques, I really appreciate the input! I am going to stick weigh the FS18. I am planning a round chine, cut-down version similar to Hooter's boat. I am going go with a tee-niny little console and extended decks. Do you see any problem there?

No problem with that type of customization.
