I scrapped the mechanical steering and pick up a hydraulic steering kit. I found the BayStar kit for just over $500 with shipping New! that is the cheapest I found by a long shot.
I don't think there's any way you could go wrong with this decision. I LOVE MINE!!! Though I don't think it cost so much when I did it a few years ago  Its so much nicer than the cable system. The "no feedback" is super great.

Keep in mind for the future: Only use the teleflex power steering fluid. I found that other alternatives leaked past my seals. Once the leaking started, it wouldn't stop. I replaced all the seals on the hydraulic assembly and put the right fluid back in...works like a charm and an easy repair too.
I wasn't looking forward to the mech steering. I had it and thought it would save some cash. Turns out what I had wouldn't work. It was a no brainer going with the BayStar. I have had the same set up on other boats and loved it!
When I was shopping around for the best price I was surprised at the range of prices. I saw prices from $490 to over $900 for the same kit.

The console is looking really good Mike! I recall you showing me the concept and thought, "that's pretty smart" now I'm really impressed.

Thanks Chuck! I think it turned out, and it is stout too. Stop by next time you're down.
