Divinycell nice canoe 16

Post by Joshuadbryan »

I've got two issues: shipping fees on plywood and worry over rotten core plywood. The divinycell ships much cheaper and doesn't rot. Is it even feasible to simply substitute divinycell for plywood and build nearly the exact same way (except for adding multiple layers of glass to both inside and out?

I've built a cheap canoe and a fl12 so I'm not a complete newbie, but I don't even know what I don't know about foam cores. Is my idea even doable? Or does foam core require a frame/mold to work with?

Not exactly the same way. You will need more resin and more glass. That will cost more.
I can give specifications but don't expect any savings, sorry.
Epoxy-plywood is still the best deal.

Jacques:

I would love to hear those details/specifications.

Even factoring in shipping costs, plywood is still cheaper (assuming I bought everything from bateau.com)? I also assume the foam comes in sheets of 4X8 ft?

I am certain that it will cost twice the cost of a plywood-epoxy boat.
You will need the foam we stock: 5/8", twice the amount of resin minimum and much more glass.
Don;t think of foam as a way to save $, it's the opposite.

One final question: ignoring price, is foam or plywood easier to work with?

Thanks for the knowledge Jacques!

for a small/simple boat like this. marine plywood is much faster and easier to work with
