1979 Grady White Offshore 24 Restoration Transom Rebuild

Post by noreaster222 »

Greetings Bateau.

I met a fella over at THT who helped contribute to a transom tutorial featured here. He said I should make a thread over here for the rebuild and that you guys sell a lot of what I'll need to complete the job. The boat in that tutorial is very similar to the boat I am restoring so I thought it only made sense to have a running thread over here too on the rebuild.

So far all I have done is removed the fuel tank and cleaned up the hatches and the rest of the boat to a degree. I have come to believe the transom is in very bad shape. Using a ball peen hammer all but the very edges felt bad of the transom. I then drilled a couple holes in the back side near the center under the engine mount backing plate and below that in the bilge area. Both brought back a black substance not resembling wood in any way.

Moving fore, the stringers did not feel terrible. The tank hatches appeared in very good shape aside from what is believed to be a cracked PVC drain pipe in the fore tank hatch floor. This can be seen within the pictures.

Aside from that mostly what i see is fairly none-critical. The captains chair mount needing to be re-glassed. Hatch lips needing to be re-glassed. rear live-well and batter box needing to be re-glassed.

My main focus is to get recommendations on the materials to have on hand for completing the transom job start to finish. Then finish the transom and from that point just pick away at all the other smaller jobs. If anyone would like to review some pictures I've taken and then suggest a parts list for the transom job it would be very much appreciated.

After I have a good idea of the parts required for the job It'll be time think about exactly where to make the cuts for this transom job. I'd kind of like to cut the bulkhead in the rear right out while doing the job. As well as remove the battery box/live-well and either completely rebuild them or restore them separate. You'll notice someone hacked the rear bulkhead and installed a plastic hatch in the pictures.

I should state, I am very new to boating as well as repairing fiberglass. I'm very DIY oriented though and I have extensive experience in most major trades. I've been reviewing as much material as possible and am open to all suggestions/comments as a result.

I don't see a way to upload the images on this site and if i try to hot link I get an error stating, "it was not possible to determine the dimensions of the image". I hope you don't mind I'll just be linking to shared albums containing my Grady pictures.

Also, the transom is very low. While doing the repair I plan to raise it right up level with the top, unless there is cause for keeping it a bit lower than level with the two sides.
