Re: FS 17 Build

I am into to the sole installation of my FS17 build which I started 3 months ago. Several suggestions: (1) Lower your work plane as suggested and ensure your strong back base is square by checking the diagonal measurements-this is critical (2) Purchase a drywall T square from Lowes or HD to make your panel measurements. I was most impressed with the accuracy of these plans and, if followed, will yield a perfect fit for the stitch and glue stage.

That's a good idea.

I'm going to order 6x 6mm Okoume and 10x 9mm Okoume. I figure 2 extra pieces of 6mm for a small casting deck and gunwales. I might order a couple more just in case. I only really get one shot at ordering and want to have enough. I still can't believe there isn't a place in Dallas to get Okoume.

I've been going through threads for hours doing research. There are so many cool ideas people have done and options they have added. Decisions decisions...

Thanks for all the input so far.

My strongback is square right now. I checked the diagonal measurements and squared it up. I think I might connect the saw horse supports together since they are on casters.

Bought the drywall T square yesterday! I read that in another thread.

Thanks for the input!

I decided to take everything apart and lower the height as suggested. It's 31' to the top of the strongbacks now.

Good move on the strongback. You will be happy you took the time to lower it.
One more thing. You might as well start parking that red toy outside. In short order it is going to be more important to have working room for the boat than worry where the toy is parked. BBV is a bad thing and will control you

epoxy... dust... will be better to have red toy under a cover outside once the work gets started.
My already completed 'Lil Bit'. A Martens Goosen V12 set up to sail me to the fishing holes.
Currently working on making a Helms 24 our coastal cruiser.

I wish my garage was bigger. :( I think every guy thinks that... The car is covered in saw dust now. Maybe that will help protect it.

Ordered the plywood last week :) Having it delivered to work so hope they don't care.

It's been raining here a lot so yesterday I finally had a chance to buy some 1/2" MDF for frames B, C, D and the bow. I used 2 sheets. I thought about using OSD, but that MDF is so darn pretty!

Drew everything out last night and cut this afternoon. I was drinking beer last night so had to redraw the bow this morning. A giant eraser is on my list. I accidentally measured the DL of frame D 1/8" short on one side from the CL. I hope that's okay. Clearly... beer isn't part of this step, but I'll reread the notes just to make sure.

I really have no real background building stuff. Couple speaker boxes when I was a kid. I think I stared at the drawings for the frames for 2 hours before it finally "clicked".

By the way.. you can get a paper cut from MDF!

Been working on the boat so I figured I would post some more pics. I know how people like pics.

I was impressed how fast I got the plywood. I ordered it on a Thursday and got it the following Tuesday at work. I ordered the fiberglass kit last week. Supposed to be here on the 19th.

Cut the stringers and frames. I cut one stringer out and used it to trace the others. Figured it was easier than measuring.

I didn't mount frame C, but I wanted to see what it was going to look like. I'm still using the strongback as a work bench.

Pics are always great! Makes all of us builders want to do it again. Ask many questions and you will get thorough/accurate/helpful answers. The guys here are great to work with. Keep up the good work. John
