Pit Blinds

Post by puppydrumn »

I am looking to build a 3 man composite pit blind for waterfowl hunting and figured were better to go than the forum. I understand this is not exactly a boat but it will be built in the same manor, please feel free to make any suggestions good or bad lol. There are fiberglass blinds available but cost averages 2-3k plus shipping that can sometimes be more than the cost of the blind itself.

Average three man blind is 8' and a four man blind is around 12', I was thinking a 4x8x4 and a 4x12x4 with rolling tops (we have the tops figured out) I was thinking: build 2x4 framing/sub floor and wrap with exterior ply, epoxy coat, tape corners and seams. There will be pressure from backfilling as well as ground water. I plan to anchor with screw type earth anchors. that's about as far as I am....

As discussed on the phone, it is just a box or you could think of it as a square boat.
I would make it watertight. May be 2x4' in outside corners and all seams taped from inside.
4' is not very high and a 1/2" sheet should take the pressure if you have vertical 2x4's every 2'.
I would have a sump to pump out and a shoe box type lid.

some Google searching turned up these sites:

good options appear to be
a sloped back behind bench for comfort
a ammo shelf in front
do not see a sump pump option but I think this is important based upon the blinds I have been in

A couple of ideas :help: :

Build in a bench seat along the back. Maybe a shelf for ammo and "necessities" along the front. A step on each end for getting in/out. A more complex build but the extra angles would add rigidity to the box and make for less of an excavation.
cheers
