Privateer 22

Questions about boat repairs with our resins and fiberglass: hull patches, transoms and stringers, foam, rot etc.

I'd say the keel is really important, but it is a guess. If the keel was glassed over the wood area, the wood would be there to reinforce the glass in any impact or in beaching. If it is uniformly epoxied, it would act like a battering ram against a submerged log, for example.

Can you hog out the wood? If so, I'd remove it from above and glass in some hardwood - probably white oak or mahogany.
My boat build is here -------->

Frank I will be watching your project with interest. I am just starting to rebuild a boat that looks very similar to yours. Mine is 21x8.5 What does yours measure? Not sure yet how I will finish mine but I have time to think it over.

Hey Fuzz, I just looked at your thread, love the lines of that boat as evidence by my privateer which looks very similar. I'm told a Sintes design was the basis for Layton bay boats (http://www.anglersedgemarine.com/Page.a ... 2-Bay.aspx).

I'll keep an eye on your build to see how things progress, I gurantee I will not be moving as fast!

Not too sure about the fast part. Seems like it takes me forever to get things done now days
Mine should look like the one you posted but there is no way it will be that pretty. But it was not built to be a looker, just a working girl from the start :D

Not much doing here Fuzz, cold and wet most weekends and I don't have a shop so subject to mother natures work schedule. However, between basketball coaching and getting ready for baseball I have mocked up center console plans and purchased materials, hope to,start that soon.

Will keep you all posted.

Started on a console recently. Intention is to just glass over the foam then remove foam. Top and steering panels will have a core glassed in. I suppose I could use plywood/divinycell as a core for the entire console but want to try out this way.

You know what I wrote about using insulation foam.

It is less critical for a console but still a problem. I hate to see good work and materials wasted.
Plus, whatever the foam, you need high density inserts where you are going to bolt things: steering, controls, grab rails etc.

I'm with you....to be clear, the insulation foam is not staying in the console. I was more open to multiple tries to get the right layout with insulation foam than a more appropriate (and expensive) core material. At this point I can choose between....

A. Use what I have built as a mold, laminate over it then remove foam when complete. Then, laminate in a high density inserts where needed i.e. Helm panel. This is very much like my existing boats center console where in the majority of the console is just glass with the helm and top of the console the only areas with cores.

B. Deconstruct mold and duplicate pieces with a high density core material which will lead to the entire console having a core.
