Jaysen you asked about the shop.
I was tired of working outside under tarps and what not trying to get my boat ready to fish every year. I did not even have a carport. In 1987 we had a fantastic fishing season and I had a ton of money burning a hole in my pocket. Without giving it a lot of thought I called a company up and had them come build me a shop. It is 40x60, 18 foot eves and the roll up door is 16x16. In hindsight there is a lot I would have done different. Starting with it is too big. Most of the space is just used for dry storage. A pole barn would have worked just as well for that and been much cheaper. Thats life, we live and learn hopefully
Currently building Jacques Mertens ST21 "Skinnydip". Boating adventures: Splash testing and using 'Skinnydip, as a basis of further building refinement; Adams 44’ sailing sloop "Great Sandy" (cruising and maintaining); Iain Oughtred Feather Pram "Mini Dip" (building); Jacques Mertens R13 "Wood Duck" (built and due for maintenance).
Well well the travelling man is back So how was NZ?
Thanks for the progress comment. I am not sure if I moved forward or not on some of this but I had to keep somebody happy

A friend gave me the use of his lakeside cottage in Queenstown as a 70th birthday present. It has a good library and cellar, and immaculate Jaguar and Porsche sports cars in the garage that need to be driven. The narrow winding mountain roads radiating from Queenstown are as scenic as they are exciting to drive. So a wonderful holiday. Back to boat building tomorrow.

Congratulations on the birthday. Ones that end in a 0 are big ones.

I think I need to upgrade my group of friends
Only the ones ending in 0?
I thought the real big deal was actually witnessing someone adding 1 to your age. Otherwise...

I tried to say something but God thought I was wrong and filled my mouth with saltwater. I kept my pie hole shut after that.
I have a Lund 16' aluminum 1988 predator. Not the same class of boat, but the reason I mention it is because it has rod boxes build in under the gunnels on each side. You could extend a flat section (mine are about 7-8" wide without measuring), and then drop a vertical board down and see if you get any rodspace, or with a 21' boat(looks beamy, mine is 84" outsides), I suppose you could go 10" horizontal if the angles don't work out. My hullsides are almost vertical and I think you have a little more flair, but just a guess. Anyhow, then there is a thin strip of aluminum on each side of the gunnel and you can set clippers, pliers, sinkers, beer, cigar, etc. on the top edge of the gunnel without fear of a kerplop.
I'd cut a board and rout a groove for plywood where the decks were desired and then in your case, glass it all up with 6 oz, and I'd be tempted to leave the printthrough for a little dirtcatcher, shoegrip, work surface, etc. Then the routed board makes the outside edge that keeps stuff from falling out of the boat. My rubber handled pliers ends up there a lot. And it makes the edge a nice place to lean without feeling like you are going over, and you can step on the gunnels getting in and out. And my gunnels are mounting area for not less than cleats, downrigger, marine antenna, RAM Mount for my fishfinder (I move it when I go out to a ball peg), bow and stern light mounts, trolling motor mount (for'd). There is also a nice locker near the captain's chair aft under the gunnel where I keep all the important stuff, sunglasses, skeeter dope, fuses, bag of candy, etc. The same box on the other side is for all my electronics-that one goes to the floor.
Regards, the boat looks really nice and clean inside.
FallGuy 1000 thanks for the input. I still remember I owe you a full size picture
As for the gunwales I have been thinking very much along the same lines as you posted. It will either be under them or some form of rocket launcher to hold the rods. Each has plus and minus to it. I to seem to use them for a shelf at times so they need a small lip to keep stuff from falling overboard. The boat has a fair amount of flare and I want them wide enough so that when you step to the side of the boat your leg hits them before your foot hits the hull.
I am planning on putting some form of cabin on this boat but I am still trying to work that out in my head. It will be just enough for day fishing with no plan to overnight. It would be easy if I was going centre console but that does not work so good here. I had a 20 foot open Whaler and while it worked just fine the fun factor was low on most days. Something about being cold and wet kept me from being able to have any fishing partners And SWMBO says no head, no go
