Philippines plywood boil test results/Epoxy source?

Post by anonymous »

Hi, this is JohnM, GV11 builder. I´m in the Philippines. I did epoxy joint break test and boil test on 1/8" exterior grade plywood. (I´ll test 1/2" today).

Using phil brand Pioneer Maestro Marine Epoxy putty on lapped (?) joint, 2"x2" pieces:
wood failed; epoxy joint did not fail.

NOTE: 1/2" Marine Grade plywood Atlas brand made in Phil., 4x8, is P500 (about $10.00 US). 1/4 and 3/8 is much lower price.

Boil test: (1/8" phil-made ATLAS brand, Type 2, "C/E"-not marine, just ext. grade), above 2x2 piece boiled 10-15 minutes. (Long enough?). No delamination, no warping, no epoxy joint failure.

QUESTION: Anyone know of Liquid Epoxy suppliers/distributors in Philippines or even Taiwan or Hong Kong? West Systems has distributor in Manila but haven´t talked with them yet.

Take care, folks, and happy building!

JohnM

John,
With plywood prices like that, spring for the west! Ahhh the PI, nickel beers and $10 plywood. "Uno cervesa negra!" Are those micro balloons in the bottom of that San Miguel bottle or just vitamins? If I was there I´d be a boat buildin´ fool. I´d keep two families fed with good paying jobs for sanding/fairing technicians. What a place, I miss it sometimes.
Jim (Cubi Pt in the ´80s)

JohnM: we have other builders in the Philipines and they could not find an epoxy supplier.

We ship kits all over the world but it is expensive. Estimate that shipping will cost around 150% of the price of the kit, less if we go surface but that takes 6 weeks.
JimW, you should have been in Cubi in late 60´s early 70"s. The O´Club was the original "Wild and Crazy" place; world reknowned. Dime drinks, for everything whether a beer or triple shot. First night in for a carrier we were restricted to the concrete tank downstairs to minimize damage. Sometimes an Aussie or NZ squadron would be there; I´m surprised the roof stayed on the joint. Those guys know how to party!

Hi all,

Thanks for the replies. I´m really psyched up to build a boat here...though i´m still looking for the liquid epoxy and outboard motors.

I did boil test on Atlas brand 1/2" Marine Grade. No problems after 30 min.+ boil and just left it in water to cool.

There is (apparently acceptable if my test counts) marine epoxy putty avail. here, but couldn´t reach the West supplier in Manila, phone number not hooked up yet so maybe it´s a new business.

Raka or other epoxy is asian made? ...

For epoxy shipment, 6 weeks surface is ok; I´d order 60 liters, maybe 100+ if can get in a barrel or other heavy duty container.

JimW, hi, yes this is same JohnM ...I´m here incorporating my humanitarian aid/educa. organization, helping a private high school on Mindanao recover following destruction of it´s facilities. I´m looking into building boat(s) here and also looking into building an amphibious bush plane (e.g., zenith 801 or murphy, etc.) which would be tremendously useful. As for boats, I think the C19 or OB19 will be my first choice for philippines building.

Will try to post in more appropriate forum next time.

Happy building and Happy New Year,
JohnM

John,

You be careful down there in Mindanao! You can feel very safe for years then one day, .....
Tip: wear canadian flag patches on jackets. Leave the stars and stripes tucked away.
jim

It is not marine epoxy and can not recommend it.
It cost, in some packaging, a tiny little bit less than System Three IF you buy their regular resin but that one blushes a lot.
If you buy their non-blushing resin, similar to our resin, it cost more.
