Hope everyone is well. Just picked up some beautiful meranti down in New Orleans after Jacques gave the green light to use meranti for the SK14. I feel a little more comfortable with meranti given it is more rot-resistant than Okoume since I’ll be in the Louisiana marshes where there’s plenty of underwater obstacles that can ding a hull.
Thanks to all who already answered my questions.
I love the idea of building my own boat. Makes it feel like it will be more “mine” when it’s all said and done.
First question is this:
I wanted to reduce the size of the foredeck to the size seen in the picture below. Has anyone else here done this and i’d Love to see the edited dimensions of cutting your wood to make this happen if anyone’s has them lying around.
I’ll probably just have to figure it out myself, but wanted to ask just in case.
And fair warning: this is my first build, so i’m sure i’ll Be asking a ton of questions as they come up.
Oh, and one more thing:

Some of that plywood looks so nice it is hard to cut it up and cover it with glass.
I am sure those that have built one of these will be able to answer any question that might come up. I am no help with the foredeck question, sorry.

It really does seem kinda hard to put a saw to it.
Then I think about the final product and that all melts away.

Congratulations on the beginning!
You can modify your build to be what you want. Respect the placement of the framing and you'll be good. Where the original bulkhead is, cut that frame down to the same height as the sole. Use card board to make a template in the new bulkhead location. Keep in mind that changes waste wood. You may need an extra piece due to the tight nesting of all parts. I haven't seen the SK14 nesting so you might extra...
Good luck!

Re: SK14 build in Louisiana
I liked the short deck option as well and the SK14 from Skiff Life, that I believe is the one pictured, was one of the reasons why. My set of plans included the short foredeck optional drawing. The rear of the foredeck lands on frame A. I can take a photo of the plan if you don't have the drawing, but I am sure Jeff or Reid at BBC will provide it as well. I just finished my SK14 about a week ago and am glad I went with the short foredeck.

Re: SK14 build in Louisiana
Update:
Got sick with COVID with very mild symptoms, so I had some extra time to put in to the boat. Got the panels and stringers all spliced together and did the transom.
Zip-tied everything together and spot welded with the epoxy putty. Had to adjust a few minor things, but overall I’m happy with where I’m at with not much woodworking experience in my past and doing it by myself.
Added a pic of my building buddy with a duck he chased down and plucked out of mid-air.

Re: SK14 build in Louisiana
Would y’all recommend to fiberglass the deck? If so, do I fiberglass both sides? Or just the top side? Thanks!
Re: SK14 build in Louisiana
Cforester821,
Fiberglassing the deck is optional. I would recommend using 6 or 10 oz woven cloth. Glassing the decks would simply give you some abrasion resistance and slightly more rigidity. You would only need to glass the topside of the decks, the underside would simply be coated in epoxy.
Personally, I will be glassing the decks on my FS18 with 10 oz.

Someone asked me, if I were stranded on a desert island what book would I bring... "How to Build a Boat."

Re: SK14 build in Louisiana
How much fairing compound should I get for the SK14? What brand do y’all recommend?
