Any definitive recommendation for a rotary steer system? Fs4LS+10%

Post by VT_Jeff »

I was going to go with a stick steer but the options are very limited and they seem to be priced high for what you get. I've seen a few affordable rotary steering systems but am wondering if, at this point, someone has installed/used/approved/rejected a particular system/supplier.

Thanks as always,

Jeff

Whatever brand I would recommend a No Feed Back helm. Even on a small engine the prop will want to turn the boat to port when you let go of the steering on a helm without it.

Noted Cape Man, thanks. Most of the ones I've been shopping put that high in the feature list. I wasn't really aware it was a safety issue related to letting go of the wheel, I thought it was more of a comfort thing. I'm a sailor, so I expect my boats to have some weather helm and to round up if I let go of the wheel, I guess that's not what you want with a micro-speed boat!

It's not only a safety thing, but comfort as well. Once you take a heading with a NFB helm you are not constantly having to hold the wheel or fight it to keep it from from turning.

I got the steering system and a wheel, showed up yesterday. Cable is large and quite stiff, I suspect you could hang a few chairlifts from it without stressing it. It's going to be a bit of a challenge getting it routed without giving up my completely sealed bilge. I wasn't shopping for more challenges but sometimes you just get an unexpected bonus. :help:

The wheel has 3-4 inches of "dish" which is extremely valuable space that it does not need to take up. I'm gonna check with JD and see if there's a flat wheel available and also see if there are any helm options with a shorter shaft/bezel. Front to back, the helm and wheel is 12" deep. That's a lot of precious space in this over-sized SUP.
