Sk 14 build in Corpus Christi

Post by Carl Miller »

Greetings from Corpus Christi! My brother and I started the sk14 build in November 2021…Splashed it May 2022. Plenty of hiccups along the way but thanks to the forum, most of our mishaps were discussed in depth right here.

It’s far from perfect but I’m super proud of our accomplishment.

First mistake was butt blocking the gunnel… ended up sanding it all away… other than that the stitch and glue hull assembly went great… extra holes and heavy duty zip ties to close the nose

February in south Texas was cold… apparently closed cell foam is temp sensitive… ended up using 2 kits… adding additional weight… arrg… at least the added weight is low in the hull

Fiberglass on the hull wet out great… but used a slow hardener in cold weather and it didn’t cure on its own… had to fire it off with burrito lamps and a space heater… took a week of moving lamps around to finally cure. Ok.. I learned.

Used way too much fairing compound… sanded And sanded then primed the hull and deck

Rolled and tipped with interlux perfection… white deck platinum hull… then Eva foam on the deck around grab bar (drilled filled drilled screwed and 5200ed.

Used this Oldsmobile trim for a rub rail…

Ended up bolting on a Honda 9.9 and moved the gas tank to the front hatch…

Got her trimmed out with a few more minor mods and this is how she looks today

I’m super happy with the performance …up on plane easy …even with two adults. Top speed 18 knots loaded with two people… 22 knots solo.

Great boat. Get some sea trout. The gas tank locker should be vented to keep fumes from building.

Nice work.

We are planning to move to North Padre...in a year or two..

Yeah. I'm moving to N. Padre on the water. I can get to the oil rigs in no time.
