On the Abaco 23, is the hull made out of 1/4 or 3/8 ply?

check build of materials on study plans:

BILL OF MATERIALS
Plywood (4x8’ – 122x244cm)
6 mm (1/4”) 9
9 mm (3/8”) 6
12 mm (1/2”) 18
Also see our CNC Kit, which is a precut plywood kit that includes all the plywood needed to
build the boat as designed.

That doesn't tell me if the hull of the boat is 1/4 or 3/8.

The Panga 22 has 3/8th inch bottom panels so I would say 3/8ths as an educated guess.

It does, if you understand how scantlings are developed. Of course, only BBC can tell you the correct answer. The AB23 is an offshore boat. Offshore boats are designed for more forces beating the hull to death and that is not 1/4”. I’d be more curious as to whether the bottom is 12mm, so I hope I don’t seem snarky.

This boat has a very developed bottom. With the amount of 3/4" and the 1/4" used for the sides and 3/8" for some of the frames and the top speeds upwards of 45mphs I would say the bottom is made of 1/2". The only way to know for sure is to buy the plans. The boat is one is one of my favorites. Tom

Corrected 3/4" to 1/2" for the bottom.

Tom ~ there is no 3/4” on the bill

From the Bill of Materials I would say that the bottom is 1/2”.
Remember that while the ply gives the shape and some strength, much of the structural strength come from the external and internal layers of glass!

Ok thanks. I have built many smaller skiffs both wood and foam core, but never a bigger boat.

I am wondering how that 3/8 or 1/2 is going to flex to the curvature.

But also, building the ALBURY BROTHERS 23 (I already have the plans to that) isn't totally out of the hat yet. So we will see. I'll talk with Jeff on Monday.

Hope you guys in the big bend is ready for this rain maker. They are calling for 20-25" here in GA.
