If you’re concerned about epoxy bonding with white oak (legit), be careful of the acetone advice. Acetone changes the chemical structure of epoxy. Make sure the acetone is evaporated 100% before you apply epoxy.

There’s a guy on YouTube that shows the problem of acetone weakened epoxy. If you watch that you’ll problem keep the acetone in another room when you’re working on important parts.

Isopropyl alcohol is much safer cleaning agent ad epoxy laughs at it. Take a bit more to get good surface prep. If you can get old style MEK that’s another option. My experience with the new crap is that it leaves a residue.

Agree re: acetone. I use white spirit for cleaning epoxy off my skin, tools, etc. Cheaper and less aggressive. Never bought acetone.

Just submitted my final exam for ASA 105 Coastal Navigation. Online course. Mostly charting work, current, tide, dead reckoning and EP fixes, etc. Learned some stuff along the way. Looking forward to putting it into practice before too long. We're planning to do some actual sailing in March.

Hope you pass (I'm sure you will). Have been toying with getting a six pack license if for nothing else than keeping the juice flowing. Can't see taking rich, arrogant people fishing, but to say I'm a "Captain" might be cool.

I use white vinegar for clean up and denatured alcohol for prepping.

I'll give the white vinegar a try - usually use it for pickling, so I have a gallon or two to hand :-)

Yep passed, both with >95% in the exam. Most of the questions were repeats from the course "quizzes" that answers are provided for after you submit them. We averaged >95% for the quizzes (multiple choice), with the Navigation Officer just coming out on top, as she usually does! Nothing was really difficult, although there were some tricky questions along the way. The course isn't very challenging. I would imagine anyone, adult or child, with some prior sailing knowledge could pass, if they weren't afraid of a few simple calculations. But the simple fact that you had to read all the course text, practice the questions, do the exercises, and actually were forced into plotting positions, etc. was useful. Most things we got wrong were silly mistakes - just the things that would trip you up in real life. We're probably going to do the Celestial Nav course ASA107 next year, although there are plenty of free guides, or cheap books that describe the system for fixing position with sextant in detail. Doing the course will at least force us to practice.

Had to look up the six-pack license, but it looks good. Nice to have if you can get it. Didn't know about that, or that it was a requirement for any commercial work.

Just back from a few days away. Wood in the car for building a cradle to hold the boat when turn-over time comes. Back to building tomorrow.

Cheers,

By the way....love your Heinline quote at the bottom. Can't write a Sonnet or program a computer though...

Ah, there are so many good quotes out there, that it is tough to pick a favourite.

I also like "A computer lets you make more mistakes faster than any invention in human history, with the possible exceptions of handguns and tequila."

Cut the holes for the seacocks (after cutting oversize and filling with putty).

Sanded the sections between bulkhead C and D, where the head and sink will be.

Cut holes for the hose to run through the boat from a manual bilge pump located in the cabin (second one is in the cockpit).

Test fitted the head (again) with bolts in to hold it down securely. Really tight fit for the head, seacocks, holding tank, y-valve, and all the hoses, for all to be operational, but looks like it will work out.

Water tanks arrived this morning. Tested one quickly today, and it appears watertight. Will fill all three and leave for a few days, to see if any leaks develop. Need some fittings first. Whenever I do any plumbing at all, I always have every single connection and fitting imaginable, except the one I need at that precise moment.

Glued in the mast step.

Fitted the starboard portion of the aft-deck. All good.

Next job for the head is to do a full test on the plumbing with everything in place, including building a shelf/enclosure for the holding tank to sit on. Once that is done I'll fit the final portion of the deck. Boat looks good.

I'll post some photos in a day or two.

Starboard aft portion of the deck is on. Tomorrow I'm gluing in the shelf for the head holding tank. Once I'm convinced that everything is in order with that, I'll glue on the other portion of the deck.
