Donating a boat
I´m just about finished with my first boat and need to make room for it. Rather than sell my old boat, I want to donate to a charity.

Does anybody know of a worthy charity in the northeast Florida area?

Matt Brueckner

I can think of two groups that deal with donated boats.

First is the Sea Scouts program of the Boy Scouts of America. They either use the boats as projects for the scouts, or they sell them to raise money.

Second, a lot of colleges accept donations and then either sell the boats or use them in the collegiate programs.

In either case, depending on your boat, they are likely to sell it to raise money.

- Rick Tyler

Eckerd Youth Alternatives runs many camps in Florida. My daughter was helped by the one in Floral City, FL. They have had need for a small river boat to resupply their canoe group trips. Camp E-Nini-Hassee is their name. They do wonderful things there and deserve all the support anyone can lend them.

Jim

Jim,

I sent them an email about the boat. BTW, the boat is a 13´ whaler with a bad motor, no trailer (going to use for the GF12). The boat hull is in good shape. New console, benches and paint about 1 year ago.

I´ll wait until I hear back from Eckerd Youth Alternatives. If they don´t want the boat, and anyone else knows of or is involved with a charity that might. Let me know.

Matt Brueckner

Whoever you end up giving the boat to, make sure that you get a "hold Blameless - for instructional purposes only" letter from the receipent. Otherwise, although they may greatfully accept your gift, if someone gets hurt the parents decide to sue you.

I donated my expermintal airplane to the Aviation Explorer Scouts. I wrote up a hold blameless letter and got the scout leader to sign it. I´m glad I did for a number of reasons. One thing that I didn´t plan on is that they sold the airplane to a guy that wants to rebuild and fly it. Hopefully I won´t be liable for anything that happens to guy that bought it.
