C12 Fibreglass Cloth

Post by Chuck »

Can somebody give me some direction on how to cut and apply the fibreglass cloth to the bottom of the C12?

In the kit there is 4 yds (12 lf) of 50" 6oz cloth. There is enough to cover the bottom length-wise, but I don´t see how there will be enough to cover the bottom and go 6" up the sides width-wise as the laminating sechedule calls for. The width is approximately 60" at the widest point.

If the cloth needs to be cut and spliced somehow, can you describe how it should be done?

[ This message was edited by: Chuck on 07-03-2003 09:46 ]

It´s done in two pieces: put the fabric on the bottom with the edge lined up with the keel, overlap 3".
When you cut the glass to fit one side, 6" up the sides, the piece leftover can be turned fore and aft and will fit the other side.

Jacques -

After a couple of weeks away, I finally got a chance to try this...

I followed your directions with a template and unless I am misreading them, I don´t see how this will work.

Is there any chance you could post a diagram on how to cut and overlap the cloth??

Thank you.

We lost that drawing in our hard disk crash and I can´t remember how I did it. The area is there but I don´t remember the layout.

One easy way to cover the whole bottom is as follow:
- lay the whole piece of fabric on the bottom, centered and cut around with the specified overlap. This will not cover the chine in the middle.
- use the large pieces left from the bow to cover the chines.
It is just as strong that way. You have one extra seam close to the chine but one less at the keel.

We always try to help the builder save but in this case it may not be worth the cutting: one extra yard of fabric cost less than $ 10.00.
Okay - I´ll try that. Should the seams near the chine overlap be 6"?

I definately agree that there seems to be plenty of material.

Thanks!

Chuck
