Post by mikebro72 »

i thought id share this pic...these are not mine....they are on a "mass-produced square canoe"(no names)...this is where i had got the idea for mine...very easy to make...

when i spoke to tomc, he is supposed to start making some manual trim tabs...im sure they will be similar to this...

Those are all well and good for helping you jump up on plane quickly, but if you've got any downward angle on them you'll be sacraficing speed and economy. That is where the Smart Tabs win out. The water pressure pushes them up and reduces drag. I know they cost $100, but most will spend about $50 putting these together.

I have experience with this type of tab too.

My opinion,
Tim

I have to agree with Tim. These are a neat (I give you an A+ for ingenuity) and economical alternative but I think you are sacrificing more than gaining. Sure they give you a quick holeshot but like tim said, you lose top end performance, economy, or even the ability to adjust list in various seas...a feature probably capable to these but only after you stop to adjust as opposed to doing it under way with a remote set up or even the Smart Tabs mentioned earlier(even though they don't adjust the list of the boat).

ok....that is what finetuning is for..but, cool.........

i was just offering an alternative...if it cost you 50$ to put these together, then you should spend the 100$ to buy the smart-tabs...

my opinion..

i edited this a little bit after re-reading....i didnt realize how rude it sounded as i was typing it....sorry

these can be built for around 20 dollars...(for both)

Very nice idea, and I think it can be done for quite a bit less than $50. Just for kicks I would try it before getting smart tabs. It looks like it will work just fine, and most important it will be a fine excuse to purchase additional tools. :D

If you are talking one of the superlights like the Indian River D15 or the square back canoe - do they need to be that long? A lot of force is generated out there on the end.

Would a bit shorter and wider do the same thing?

Fishing in the skinny waters, I'd give up some top end to get out of some of the flats I've gotten into.

These look great for a small boat in inland calm waters. I would not want to be cault in a rough sea with them as there rigidity woud be a liability and could even tear a whole in the stern! This is drastic but true, especially with the long lever length shown.

Good boating!

Ive been thinking of using/making some automatic trim tabs. Id like to rig a deck pulley and some wire rope to the tab to adjust it. I figure once your in deeper water you could stop adjust em and get back your top end.

Anyone try this?
