Painting the Daggerboard Trunk

Post by marcb »

I'm about to seal up the daggerboard trunk for my 16' Otter.

Does one typically paint the inside of the trunk? It seems like a good idea; I glassed & epoxied it - adding another coat of protection UV & abrasion) should be a good thing?

Thoughts?

Thanks

Can't hurt it any. It's a bit of extra protection. I painted mine white, as well as I could from the outside.

Thanks Dave,

How ya doing anyway? Family good?

I'm on the water 30-40 minutes after ice-out this year. Maybe we can hook up or try again for a messabout?? Have you talked to Dan lately?

Hi Marc,

Yeah, the family is good, still waiting for number two to pop-out in May. It's another girl, and from the looks of things, she's big...:).

I've seen Dan posting a bit lately, which is good. He always has good advice, and I learn a lot from his posts. I haven't heard from Al Ball in a while. I met him for coffee in the fall- I think it was. He was doing well then, but he hasn't posted lately.

Mark Round is doing all kinds of builds, have you been following his stuff? I still want to see his OD16. The od16 was one of the first designs that caught my eye and I've been dying to see one in real life.

Plus, there are guys around doing CS25s DION for one, bjl_sailor is doing a TW28 about ten minutes from my house, but that won't be finished for a while. Then there's a couple of DE25s in MA I think too- JimMac's and another I think. I'd love to see all of these boats. I don't know whether Odras is still building his OD or not, he seldom posts anymore. I was sorry to miss last year's get together, but I'd try my best to make one this year.

And of course, I'd love to see a completed Otter.

How about you, how's the wife and kids?

Thanks for the reply Dave-

Family is great, Busy with baseball, soccer, et al.

I have corresponded with Mark on the board a few times; I think I drive right by his house on the way to work every day (I work in Marblehead now). I may invite myself to peek in on his projects soon! I'm going to try to get in touch with Dan also.

Maybe a few of us can play hookey in the spring & do some fishing.

I'm also very much up for another try at the messabout. I wonder if it wouldn't be better if we did it right after school gets out but before summer vacations, say the last weekend in June? Let me know your thoughts and maybe we can start planting the seeds.

Best of luck with the new baby & keep me posted!

Sounds good. I can always play a little hookey here and there. But yes, I'd like to see if we can get a big group this year. June would be fine with me, now that I've got the truck fixed and the boat running pretty well.

I coated the inside of mine with an epoxy/graphite mix. It should stand up well to the centerboard being pulled up and down through it.

I'm not saying that what I did is typical or the best choice, but it's a choice.

Marc & Dave,
I'm going to jump in on this thread and cast my vote to figure out a time for a meet. I feel bad not making the trip last year. Is Cape Cod too far for either of you? I mention it because we are up there almost monthly beginning the end April through October. I can still make a trip to the north shore as well.

Good to hear from you Marty.

The Cape might not be a bad call - alternatively, we may want to consider something around the Plymouth area, affording people an opportunity to go without the hassles of getting to the Cape, but allowing you a relatively short drive. Let's try to get a sense of who might be interested & go from there.

Does the late June time frame work for you? We appear to be rapidly approaching the point where the wives will need to be notified.

Marc,
My only conflict in June is Father's Day weekend, the 17th. Beyond that I see no other conflicts that I'm aware of. Do you want to start a new thread and subject heading so others might notice?
Marty
