This may be a dumn idea, but how about a plans classified section on this board? This would have to pass the legal smell test by Jacques, but I know from experience that sometimes our boat appetite can be bigger than our stomachs. I myself purchased the GF18 plans, but had to scale it back to the GF16. Since the plans have already been purchased, I don't know how this would cost boatplans-online money. It might even make more money, because people might buy more plans at one time. I, personally, would take advantage of this.

Plans would have to be verifiably genuine (I don't know how this could be done) -- it would be disastrous if there were photocopies floating around. I'm sure there are some other major pitfalls, but I thought I'd toss the idea out there. I hope I don't get flamed for this post!!!

Jacque's plans are not expensive most of them are less than a 100.00 bucks.
i don't know why we are even worried about it as the cost is such a small fraction of the cost of building a boat.

Lets just hope Jacques doesn't raise his prices to what others are charging.

I guess you could say i am happy with the prices of the plans.

Ditto what AZ builder said-we're talking a hundred bucks here, fer crissakes-you spend that on beer, bait and gas for a day trip fishing! I intend to build 2 PH 18's. When I do, he'll get the money for a second set of plans because it's the RIGHT THING TO DO. Geez, this is so simple that I can't believe some people just don't get it...

It's a good discussion.

Often it doesn't occur to builders that someone could be unethical by making a copy of the plans and returning to get their money back.

That's because they are good people and doing such a thing doesn't cross their mind!

Bitch all you wan't about the price or return policies!

Then try to design a product ,any product that actually works as intended and people actually wan't to buy.

Then you'll bow you head in shame while scratching it trying to figure out how Jacques and Co. do it so cheaply and well.

The same applys here think twice on what you want to build. Buy once.
I feel for Jacques an co. I as well own a co. An the hardest thing about owning it is saying NO. I don't work for free.
If you don't like Jacques return policey then shop some where else. This is not HOME DEPOT.

I just ordered my third set of plans friday afternoon and I haven't cut the first piece of wood. I've done alot of researching on my way to building a boat that will best suit my needs. I think reviewing the plans of of the OD18, XF20 and GF18 will make my final decision a sound one.

I'm also planning on building a smaller boat at some point for no apparent reason at all.

Remember, this is the crowd that doesn't want to pay $75 extra for okoume for the Cheap Canoe, but will spend more than that on sandpaper, epoxy and fillers to smooth out ACX.

Seriously, though, it's a very good deal. Another boat designer (very nice reputable fellow who does good boats) charged me $25 for study plans that didn't show anything more than what Jacques shows on his website for free.

It's an interesting difference in sales philosophies - give the customer lots of info and count on the warm fuzzy feelings to generate large sales volumes or give away nothing and plan on having a large group of customers who've had to pay for the privilege of deciding that the product is not a good fit.

I know which one I prefer.
