Round these parts we have a "slot" limit on the red fish/spot tail bass/damn that's good eats/what-ever-you-want-to-call-them. I can catch them 3/4" under, and 3/4" over (and much larger) all day long. I've only found one or two a month that are in the slot. 3 years ago I caught my first ever slot sized red. At the time I was on my 9' walmart kayak. I ran the yak ashore while I fought the fish and wound up about 30' from my gear. I'd been trying to catch one of these SOB for nearly a year so I wall paranoid about dropping it in the water. Me being the smart guy I am, I walked about 5yd up the beach and deposited my fish while I went for my stringer (yes, I keep my dinner on a stringer when I'm fishing).
Now one thing you need to know about Beaufort... we love us some 'Merica! in the form of jarheads and blad eagles. The Marines are easy to keep track of... look for a walking attitude that is quick to hold the door, play with children and fight anyone who looks at them without a smile. The eagles on the other hand... I just happened to notice one sitting on a dock about 1/4mi from my fishing hole when I paddled by it. Glorious looking birds. It gave me a death stare, I saluted and left it the heck alone. Then I forgot about it.
If you recall where we were at the end of the first paragraph (Fuzz may need to go back and read it again, which might get him stuck in an endless loop) you may be asking "what the hell if wrong with this moron?" I promise to tie all this together. As I was picking up my stuff I hear this odd rustling sound. At first I thought is was a spoonbill or marsh hen or maybe a gator up the creek a bit. But as I turned around I realized it was that DAMN EAGLE STEALING MY FISH!
These day my "salute" to the eagles uses only one finger and is much less respectful.
I'm sure this is a regular occurrence in Alaska. Just let SWMBO know that at least one southerner knows the pain.
