This sounds like I could breathe in the lead more easily than by sanding. Don't organic filters only last a few hours? I will try this on the varnish but still have concerns about the lead paint.

I have not, mostly because I had planned on epoxy primer and topside paint for refinishing and didn't want any residue from the stripper causing problems. Even though I'm leaning towards another oil based paint instead of the epoxy/LPU I still don't want the paint stripper causing any issues. Guess I need to learn more about paint strippers.

I restored an old little boat a few years ago that must have had 8 coats of lead paint on it. I used a paint stripper called Jasco and it did a fine job. You paint it on like a paste, let it sit about 20 minutes and scrape it off in sheets. One coat at a time. No dust. No way would I sand that paint :help: The stripper took it to bare plywood, then I was able to safely sand it and refinish with epoxy. No problem with the epoxy bonding. Paint stripper is your friend here

No problems with epoxy bonding in the joints! Hmmm. Guess I will make another trip to my local Lowe's store. How much did you use for that boat? I don't want to buy too much like I have done with other items in the past.

Stripper is less friendly to gelcoat.

I still prefer the heat gun, but heat can be angry with gelcoat, too. I've given up on both with the 13' Boston Whaler project. As long as you are in a well vented area and work quickly, heat is ez pz on a wood boat. You can run a fan or some such inside the hull.

But stripper will work on wood. I just worry about what it does to adhesives of yesteryear and poly resins, etc.

The sides of this boat were white before the heat gun. The concerns about lead are more related to particulate, and you can alleviate that with N91 mask or you could go a step up with a respirator. I actually have gotten more wicked fume hits by far from stripper.

The varnish wasn't even close to final, and I was deciding which hardware to keep from 2 boats, not really a workbench!

Also, take Cracker Larry's advice on paint over me any day. He has way more boats under his belt. And if I could figure out edits...

JASCO is the best. Citristrip works ok, but is not as harsh for fumes and on your skin.

I picked up some Jasco paint remover and have been using it. I run a couple of fans (one being a squirrel cage type) to quickly move the fumes out of the workshop. So far this seems to be much less work than sanding and because of the lead I will use this on the outside of the boat as well.

I have been watching Larry's builds for years and trust what he says. Once Larry said that I could apply epoxy after the paint stripper is what actually motivated me to use it.

The Jasco works great and will usually peel off one coat of paint at a time. Just be real careful not to get it on your skin, it will strip skin off too and burn the beejeezus out of you :help: And DO NOT get it in your eyes :!:

Thank you for the warning. I read the can and purchased chemical resistant gloves and eye protection. I also keep a fan going to blow any VOCs away before I breathe them (that part is a bit chilly right now).
