more progress on the od 16

Post by plumbertuck »

latest update, I have recieved another 1.5 resin kit and have epoxied the outside seams along the lower side panel and the sole and epoxied the seams along the transom and the sides
I guess it's time for a bit of glass on the bottom, lots of fairing, even more sanding, a skeg, and then paintthe outside before another flip

I am at 6.5 gallons of epoxy / hardener purchased, I have used the listed plywood but gosh the boat seems heavy when i try to move it about the garage

any guesses out there on true hull weights ?

Ga. od 16 update

Post by plumbertuck »

latest news, I am going through the quick fair like crazy however, I think it will still have the dreaded and aforementioned "WORKBOAT" appearance. good thing I fish at night.
I have bought some paint and need to install the skeg, I am going to still try for the april launch, I have a feeling it may go a bit longer.

Ga. catfish are starting to tremble, they sense the oncoming attack, it will be a futile effort to resist.....
1) od16
2) jug lines
3) hot oil and corn meal

sat. feb. 4 th. progress update

Post by plumbertuck »

Last night I went all over with the palm sander and I thought it was all ok (some of you immediately picked up on the use of the word "thought") and today I started painting with the interlux yacht enamel glossy white, I got such a great deal on and 8O , BOOM out pops the flaw genie and puts rough patches and seam edges and all sorts of bumps and gouges and holes I never realized existed.
It took me a few minutes to come to grips with the fact I started with 16 sheets of home depot plywood and have used 7 gallons of epoxy to assemble this boat and yes, I could fair and sand for two more months and have it smoother but, this is a homemade boat for fishing in the lakes and rivers here in god old north ga. and I have about 900-1100 bucks invested in a 16 ft center console that I know is solid.
All in all it looks like a pretty decent upside down homemade boat, I think another sanding with some finer grit sandpaper and another coat of paint will help out lots, I can't wait to flip it and start finishing the inside. :)

the paint is drying out pretty good,it is probabally going to have to dry a couple of days before sanding and re-coating, its cold here this morning, in the 30's. 80 and sunny would help.
it is alot glossier than the easypoxy I used on the d-15, I like it though

console modifications

Post by plumbertuck »

well here we are feb. 20 and I have settled for the current level of workboat like finish of the exterior, ready to flip it over, It is pretty cold here right now highs in the 40's the last couple of days we have swings in temps from high 20's at night to mid 60's day so the work is slow to dry.
I put my console and epoxy in my basement it stays a constant mid 60.
I decided to cut an access hole in the seat of my console, I plan on mounting my battery box in there, I did not want to put it in the front deck with the fuel tank, sparks and fuel vapors out on the water can be touchy things to quell. I also cut an access door in the "backrest" of the center console seat, I figured it would be really nice to have when mounting my steering helm and switches and doing the wiring. I will close this access point with a couple of screws, the seat access I will probabally hinge for easy battery maintenance.

trailer purchased !

Post by plumbertuck »

after looking at used trailers on ebay, and not finding any close by my home or in a shape or budget that I could deal with, I started scouring google for trailers, trailer kits, trailer manufacturers, the kits make trailers that are too small for the od 16, so I bought a new galvanized one a few miles from work for just a little more than I originally thought it would cost BUT I got every thing I need side bunks, a tongue jack which is nice and a winch with strap(not rope). also included were the "bearing buddies"I would have bought the extras later but now I don't have to worry with that.
The trailer is a magic tilt b 16w 1200# cap.
I hope to get the boat flipped over and put on the trailer this weekend then I will finish the inside.

painting the innards

Post by plumbertuck »

I have spent a few hours in the evenings this week painting the inside, I have given most surfaces a coat and some of them two coats, the inside now is white, I will make the deck (sole) a dark or medium green as well as the casting deck and hatch covers, I will try to post pics as soon as possible,
