Re: XF-20 Newbie
Captain, is the boat still just pcs. of plywood or have you started building it? Also, I can't remember if it is Okoume or Meranti?

Re: XF-20 Newbie
Hello,
I am the new owner of capt Ron's kit and I did detailed measurements of the cut panels when I got home yesterday afternoon. The Okuome is French BS1088 but it is not 8 ft long but 2500mm by 1220mm by 09 mm. 250 mm long makes it about 98-3/8 inches long. All the panels were cut from the full length sheets of 2500mm and the layout was adjusted accordingly. The original owner did a pretty good job cutting the stuff out and it is all within 1/16 of an inch of what it should be for all the layouts
Now I have a little problem as I must procure another full sheet for the one missing panel which is from the aft bottom location.
If I order a sheet of Okuome from E-boat it is going to be 48 by 96 inches. To compensate for a shorter back panel, the middle panel which is also 98-3/8 will have to be trimmed slightly as the layout on this middle panel is slightly wider than it would have been for an 8 ft long panel. The bow panels are shorter by 4-3/4 inches to make up for the longer length of the two rear most panels. I will then have to cut one longer bow panel to make up the difference of 2-3/8 in length.
Another way around this is obtain another 2500mm sheet of 3/8 Okuome and cut the bottom panel out of it. Any ideas if this is available anywhere? Does e-boat have any sheets this size????
Another solution is to use cheaper Meranti rather than Okuome but since I only need one sheet, what is $25 difference in the scheme of things. I will have to order some more sheets of something to make the shipping charges pay for themselves.
I have not yet decided on whether I should install a sole but I like the idea of having an extra set of stringers. I can fabricate some 1/2 nidacore panels out of material I have on hand so the sole could be nidacore with S-glass outer surfaces and would be cheaper than plywood. By the time I epoxy over 4 sheets of 3/8 ply for the sole we will be looking at 200 extra pounds ( I guess ).
Thanks

Re: XF-20 Newbie
Definitely check with E-boat. I once heard that they use the larger sheets for their CNC cut kits and this may have started as a kit. Either way I'd give them a call and see if they can get you the larger sheet and go with the same stuff as the rest, then it's all the same.

No big deal if you can't find an oversize sheet of 3/8 marine ply. Just scab onto the panel you need with a piece of scrap, you gotta cover it with glass anyway...

XF-20 oversize ply - solution
I decided to post this under another subject as Capt Ron's post should close with the sale of his kit.
