It,s good to hear your ok , hate to hear about the house . I was about to have a house designed for a beach lot around the time Katrina hit , if it had come across Mobile Bay , Ft. Morgan Peninsula would have had tidal surge to elevation 18 which would have left little sticking out of the water . I put the house off until a couple of years ago and had a cast in place concrete house designed with an ICF roof and exposed concrete interior . I have started building on a different lot about 1/2 mile off the bay and 1'2 mile off the lagoon , top of slab will be at about 13'6" , if it floods I will just pressure wash and replace parts of the kitchen . One of the guys that worked with me for years has been building concrete houses on Pensacola Beach , it is the wave of the future because of insurance and replacement cost . The one he is building now will withstand greater than a cat 5 and 27' surge , they will just pressure wash the walls , it is on 68' piles down to the shell bank with #10s , caps, and columns , mines on spread footers , that,s the difference between a construction worker and a rich Lawyer .

Glad you guys are ok but heart broken about the little house. We loved that place.

AA,

So sorry for your loss. Did the storm surge do it in? How high was it down where you are. Was it frame house or CBS. It did not matter what kind of house it was here. It took them all and right off the pilings they were built on.

Regards
Tom in Steinhatchee

Tom, thank you! I’m sorry about Steinhatchee, it was a beautiful town. Very sad indeed. Did you lose your house?
8-9’ of storm surge got my house. It blew through my sandbag/plywood wall and entered the garage where it blew out a sheetrock wall that allowed the water in. There was nothing salvageable inside the house. It was a slab on grade block stucco 1 story.

Is this your main house or a 2nd place? Either way, sorry you had the trouble. I’m moving to hurricane zone next year.

For Christmas we decided to get a room at the flamingo lodge for 2 nights. Drove down Christmas eve and spent Christmas day doing a long loop around the southwest tip of Florida and up the coast to Shark River, then down through Joe River, bottom of White Water Bay, Tarpon Creek, Coot Bay, and the Button Wood Canal back to Flamingo. 12 gallons of fuel!

That looks like a heck of a trip! How long did it take to make the loop? And did you have to wear netting for the bugs?

No bugs. We left after breakfast before 8am and we're back on the trailer by 3pm. At least 50 miles.
