Re: FS 14 LS Measurement Question
Hello Fellow Builders,
Looking for Primer Advice. My boat is covered with S3 Quick Fair. What High Build Primer should I use? My criteria are high build and easy to use for a novice.
Also I sanded to 200 grit. Is that enough?
Thanks in advance for the input.
Best,
George

Re: FS 14 LS Measurement Question
I’m an idiot who’s sands to 80 and got a decent finish using S3 yacht primer. Not sure is HB but you can’t convince anyone that it isn’t based on how nice it worked. Didn’t have pinholes after second coat. Sanded real light to avoid going through.
My already completed 'Lil Bit'. A Martens Goosen V12 set up to sail me to the fishing holes.

About the S3 primer: it's not technically a high build but you can use it as a high build. That primer dries very fast and you can apply 4 coats in a couple of hours. As soon as it is dry to the touch, you can add another coat. I did that often and it works well.
The high builds are difficult to use because after only a couple of weeks on the shelf, the solids decant to the bottom of the can and it is very difficult to mix properly.
S3 tested those paints 10 years ago and gave us different formulations to try. I brought cans to local custom boat builders and there was a consensus that the current formulation is easier to use than most other primers. Many use QuickFair followed by the S3 primer and then any LPU including Awlgrip.
I am not in the resin and paint business anymore but must correct some statements made on the forum that the S3 primer cannot be used as a high build because it works when several consecutive coats are applied the same day.

Re: FS 14 LS Measurement Question
High build primer is a relative term. 4 coats as Jacques stipulates in ones day would be very good as the paint goes on thinner dries faster. A thicker paint may need two coats over two days and dries slower. I have used the S3 primer and it is very good.
The main thing is the prep work. The fairing, sanding and fairing and sanding the guide coat and fairing and sanding, etc, etc.. If you can see inperfections your not ready for primer.

Re: FS 14 LS Measurement Question
Just completed first coat of Primer. Thanks for your help Reid. I have a few questions: 1) When do I install rub rail before or after I flip the boat? 2) Is 1/4 plywood OK? 3) Should I use 2 or 3 layers? 4) Also, the builders notes say to block the hull after it is flipped. What is the best way to block the FS 14 LS? Does anyone have a link to a pic?
Many Thanks,
Many Thanks,
Re: FS 14 LS Measurement Question
On my FS14 (splashed) and LM18 (building now) this is what I used .25" x 1.50" x 16" pine lattice, three layers for the rub rail base, then BBC's Tessilmare Radial 30 (LM18). It is 1.25", the pine lattice is 1.50" wide, I'm going to bull nose the bottom edge just a bit. Should be lite weight looking and clean... Some boats have big rub rails, I like them smaller.
Most plans state rub rail first then flip...
