butt block size

Post by Cheech »

I just started cutting the wood for my 1st boat. the 14´ sharpie. The plans show a 10" wide butt block but the sides are 16" wide. The plans do not show how the blocks are to be glued to plywood. Where are the placements of the blocks. Together on the top, bottom, or separated 1 on top and 1 on the bottom.

Thanks, I read that and now understand the concept, but the problem I am having is the plans tell you the blocks are 10" wide and dont show where they go. If I use what the plans show their will be a space of 6" at the top without any blocking. My guess is this is where the seat will rest.

Cheech,

Be careful. Usually, the butt blocks are centered if they are on bottom panels (are your butt blocks on side panels or bottom panels?). This gives you 3" above and 3" below to fit half of a width of 6" biaxial tape. Try to envision how you will attach the final butt blocked piece to surrounding pieces. You´ll probably be taping it with 6" fiberglass tape, so you´ll need three inches at the edge of the piece to be free of butt blocking in order to get a smooth run for the tape.

In this picture, the blue dashed lines are where your fiberglass tape typically goes. You can see how you have to leave room for this tape to get a smooth seam between all panels plus leave room for rubrails, etc.

-Dave

The blocks are for the 16" wide side panels. 10" wide butt blocks plus the fiberglass equals 16". The plans and the "how to" doesnt explain it as clearly nor does it tell you about the tape. It just tells you to glue them.
Thanks

I cant see any dimensions for the butt blocks. Where does that 10 x16 come from? Could you have a very old plan?
Anyway, drawing D216/2 shows clearly the shape of the butt blocks and their location: centered on the seams. They can be anywhere between 8 and 10" wide.
Also see some of our builders sites for pictures.
