Recommendation on what to build.

Post by SFC Hall »

Ok, I want a winter project. Something easy and relatively quick. The only boats I have ever was a Jon boat, and it turned out very nice and a canoe with my uncle as a kid.

Here is what I want… I have a 50hp Even sitting in my barn doing nothing. I want a boat for that. I want this boat to seats at least two, maybe more, be as small and light as possible and go as fast as I can safely make it go with that 50hp…

What do you recommend? I retire in a few years and when I do I am already sure I will be building a TX18.

But back to this… I already have a fishing boat, although it would be nice to be able to fish off this… open bow maybe?...this would be just for fun, a small speedboat... maybe pull an inner tube and to go fast. Something I can complete in a few months at minimal expense. I have all the cable steering and throttle controls already.

My original plan was to just build a 15’ish simple flat bottom Jon and add additional flotation coming off the back of the transom on either side of the motor to hold the weight. But then I though, I am no expert and I don’t want to over power a boat and be unsafe….

So what do you guys think?

"Fast as possible" means low profile hull (minimize windage), flat bottom, light weight. Almost every boat on here can seat two. Just lookm for the lightest weight, flat bottom, los profile hull that can accept a 50 hp. I am betting the PH 15 with no tunnel is your deal. PH 15 hp max says 40. FS17 built carefully to keep it light might be your best choice. The GV15 and 17 seem to end up a bit heavy because of all the compartments.
