The Fishicist--A Build of an FB11

So here goes--my build of an FB11. Got some 6mm Okoume locally, the epoxy arrived, and I have been laying out and joining panels. I have had some trouble with slow set epoxy catching cold, but found a solution. I think I will spring for some fast set hardener. A fuller ongoing account is at the URL below in my sig.

It should cure.
How much did you mix?
Very small batches are difficult to measure accurately.

I made 6 ounces the first time around, took some care with the measurement. I have dealt with that problem before in wrapping fishing rods. There it's a matter of small quantity and accurate mix requirement. The joint set up fine once I got the temperature up by putting an enclosure over it with a couple of light bulbs lit inside.

I have ordered a jug of fast set hardener. If I mix it with the slow, does the set time scale between fast and slow with the proportions?

I have made considerable progress since last week. Parts cut out and stitched together. It took a bit of wrassling to get it well shaped up. Getting the bow right was the worst of it. At this point I have a 1/2" difference in my diagonals. Not sure whether I should try for any better.

A detailed account is at http://mmcgr.users.sonic.net/FB11/Stitching.html

Thanks for posting. Don't recall an FB11 build on the board, at least since I've been reading.

I like the "ugly gaps" photos -- most builders don't seem to post those shots. It looks like you have the lines pretty well straitened out now.

Keep up the good work.

I have made more progress. Got the panels tack welded together and learned why I don't want duct tape anywhere near this project.

The it was on to do the inside seams. I had a misadventure with epoxy putty going nuclear in a caulking tube. It all came good in the end, but it made for a long day.

Looking good.
I wonder if it isn't a certain brand of duct tape that does that. My CC and D15 both had duct tape applied and it worked fine, like your masking tape, but the duct tape I used on my V10 did the same thing as yours did.

I use 3M duct tape and never have any trouble with it. It is a silver/gray color.

Just checked. My current roll is Nashua tape.

Got the outside done today. Chines rounded, hickeys in the outside of the fillets fixed, some ugliness at the bow sanded out and the chines glassed. Spouse is not enchanted by sound of sander and shop vac running for long periods.

I have kept at it. The middle bulkheads are now in place. I solved a problem (I think) with keeping the back side of the fillet of the second bulkhead, (between it and the first) from spreading too much.

My FB11 project has progressed with a time out for a fishing trip to Pyramid Lake in Nevada. I landed a 26" Lahontan Cutthroat--not as big as they come there, but nice.

My cut according to plan rear seat turned out to be too small. But it wasn't too hard to splice and laminate my way around the problem. The rub rails sure took a lot C-clamps.

I have a few more small jobs to do, install the floatation foam, the front seat, and cleats for the mast support, and then comes the big cut--stay tuned.

Looks like you're getting close to the big cut! :)

Tomorrow is the big day--the great Portola Valley Chainsaw Massacre or FB11 mitosis, the big cut. In the mean time I have gotten a few more items in place. There was the front seat, cleats for the mast support, a daggerboard case made, the floatation foam, and a start on some oars. See http://mmcgr.users.sonic.net/FB11/FrontSeat.html

At this point I have finished off my first 1.5 gallons of Marine Epoxy and a pound of wood flour. A new batch arrived today so progress will not be impeded.

I was nervous enough just cutting the hole for my daggerboard. Cutting a hull in half must really seem strange. :D

Excellent! Though probably not the best idea to use a chainsaw...

So I did it

Actually as suggested I didn't use a chainsaw. Blow -by-blow account at http://mmcgr.users.sonic.net/FB11/BigCut.html
It went pretty well with no significant hitches. The cross sections of the fillets at the corners of the bulkheads were interesting.

wait wait wait...

Isn't there supposed to be a lovely assistant who first lies down in the hull, and you drape a sheet over her, before making the cut? And then you cut and pull the halves apart while she still wiggles her fingers and toes, smiling all the while? I'm afraid you'll need to do it all over again... :P
