Vagabond 23/ Vagabond 26 masts etc.

Post by Johnmon »

I have been contemplating starting on a VG23 or VG26 and found someone locally who is parting out an old Catalina 27. They have mast, sails and other hardware for sale and I am wondering if those would be able to be used on either or both of the larger VG boats. Could someone knowledgeable give an opinion?

Thanks!!

The dimensions are on the plans, compare them to what you found.
Or then post the dimensions of the parts that you found here and I will look.

I haven't actually been to the place to put my hands on the parts but it's a tall rig so the mast is supposed to be 36'.

Get as much information as you can: length of all spars and section. Try to find a profile number on them.
If not, I want to know which model year the boat was, sail area, displacement, ballast etc.

Hey Johnmon...

I have been admiring those same plans for the past year. My long term goal is to build one of the VGs. Currently, I'm trying to finish my first build, an FL14. I live just across Utah Lake from Lindon in Saratoga Springs. Where do you sail now :?:

I have a D5 that I made years ago. I sail it from the beach near the Lindon boat harbor.

Lately I have been sailing out of Provo with a guy who has a Catalina 25. He also has an Olson 30 that he intends to race, but I have yet to see it.

What to build

Post by Johnmon »

One thing about sailing on Utah lake is that a shallow draft boat is really the only way to go.

In selecting a boat, I am interested in 2 things. In order of interest are:

1. Racing
2. Comfortable cruising

Would the VG26 be a viable racer for local races or would I be better off building a VG23 and have slightly less comfort for cruising?

I don't know much about local racing. I bought a little 12' Desini last summer to learn to sail. A guy up in Park City makes them. Seems like the VG26 would be a little deep for Utah Lake, I don't know. The problem I've had with Utah Lake is that if there is much more than a breeze, then the swells get too choppy for my little tub. I got stuck out last year when the wind picked up and the swells were pushing us south. We couldn't get back to the marina. So, this year I attached a little motor mount and clamp on a trolling motor, just in case.

Another thing that has been plaguing my mind is how does one go about inspecting/painting/maintaining the inside of the trunk? When a person does 'bottom cleaning and painting on a beach' how does the bottom of the keel get cleaned and painted?
