Drain tube flaring tool

Joel, thanks for making this a permanent topic 8) I'll copy mine from the other thread.

I see I've already broken the rules, sorry
I've started by donating a drain tube flaring tool to the BBC community. This is a must have to install the tubes correctly, but something you only need for a couple of days during a build.

It's free to anyone here who needs it The only charge is that you have to pay the shipping (5$) to the next person. Keep the tool clean and don't forget you have it.

I've finished up with it and sent it to Craig (Cape Man). When he is finished he will ship it to the next user, and so on. If we can keep up with it, it will help build a lot of boats and save each builder about $50

If you need it, get your name on the list

Well it is finished....
The tool will not crimp both sides on a 1/2" transom so I put a washer on the already crimped side and crimped the cut side... I am adding a tool to the list that will stay with the crimp dies.... a small tube cutter harbor freight has them on sale for $4.00 and I am going to add it to the package because this brass tubing is a pain to cut without one it likes to get flat spots when you cut it with a jigsaw anyways Tool is ready to ship next week... I got the flaring tool today from Bob. Thanks Bob. Jbo, send me an e-mail with your address and I'll send it out to you when I'm done.

Update: I got my three drain tubes installed and the tool is boxed and ready to ship to whoever needs it next. I had two that needed to go in 1/2 " thick areas so I ended up doing what bob did. Started the flaring, then removed the piece on the already flared job to finish. Worked well. I also added a new piece to the kit: a short nipple to use as a bushing for thinner transoms.

I'd like to be added on the list to use the flaring tool when the next person is finished. One question though, my transom is a minimum 2 3/4" thick. Wll this tool be good for my application? Thanks, Mike.

You got it Mike, Captj will hook you up. No problem on the hull thickness, my transom is at least that thick. Worst case you just use a longer bolt on the tool.

Your Grady rebuild is moving fast! Nice work 8)

Thats great Larry. Appreciate it. Yes, I'm staying on top of getting this transom done. I know how I am. If I walk away for a week, it will turn into a month, and on and on. I wanted to get rear floor section back in today, but it started pouring rain. I should have it back in tomorrow. Mike

Hi Larry - thanks for the welcome! While I'm not building a boat from 'scratch', I am rebuilding a fg duck boat. It's a Ducker, which was made locally by Outlaw Marine. One of the areas trhat needs attention is the drain. It's been drilled out, or worn out, to the point that it leaks. Not what I want when it's 25 degrees out there, and I'm sitting on my keester in cold water!

I'll need to reinforce the area that the drain is in, and then install a new tube. While it's tempting to just epoxy the tube, that will make it difficult to service it in the future. I've attached a few pictures of the current project.

On a personal level, I'm a 61 year old avid duck and goose hunter in N. Idaho, near Coeur d'Alene. I have a passion for boats (currently have four in the fleet), especially the older designs from the past years of duck hunting history.

That's a cool little boat, BB 8) I don't know much about duck boats, are the lines around the gunwales to attach a blind?

You pass. See how easy we are here  Mike, please send the man the flaring tool.

The only other requirement of use is that you monitor this forum occasionally, until you pass it on to the next user. The current user pays the freight to the next.

Good luck with the rebuild and send us some more pictures :D

Have you got that GF16 finished already 8O You've only been working on it a month. I wouldn't install the drain tubes until I was finished painting, it will look nicer and you don't have to mask them. But if you're ready for it, you'll be next on the list.

There is no charge for using the tool, you just pay the shipping to the next person who needs it. Once BigBand is finished with it, he'll mail it to you.

Cut tube about 3/16 longer than hole depth. Coat with sealer, 5200 or epoxy, insert in hole. Install one die on each side of tube. Insert bolt. Attach washer and nut. Tighten until squashed.

Hey Larry,

What diameter hole do you drill. Drilling a 1" hole with a hand drill is going to end up wiht a hole slightly over 1". Does that provide enough gap for the 5200 to seal properly? Or do you go to a 1 1/8" bit leaving a 1/16" gap all around?

Regards,
Steven

Sorry guys, for the delay. I don't check this forum often enough.

I sent the tool to myvoodoo about three weeks ago. I didn't actually use it, as my
drain tube is too close to the floor of the boat. I ended up using epoxy to 'glue' the
brass tube to the 1/4" fiberglass hull. While the epoxy was still fluid, I used a heat
gun to flow it. Made a real good looking seal.

Hi Will, Please don't send the flaring tool to me, just forward it to the next person who requests it. I cut the end off my drain tube 3/16" longer than the projection from the transom and used 3M 5200 sealant to seal, works great.

Its just on the outside rim though. What do you think guys should I redo the port tube or let it go for awhile.... Feedback welcome.. Thanks .. Jmbadge..

Sent,
man I gotta slow down. Got a dang photo radar ticket on the way to the Post Office. Thats one part of AZ that I don't like :(
First one for me, wife got one about a month ago :(

Those photo tickets are just wrong in my opinion, shouldn't be legal for those states to use that have them. We don't have any photo enforcement equipment anywhere in WY and that's how it should be. :D I could rant on about how they don't meet the criteria for lawful enforcement, but then I'd just be derailing yet another post 8)

Thanks Larry, but it wasn't important enough to get a ticket over :help:

I just wasn't paying attention, probably thinking about my boat  Not your fault, not the tools fault, just my not paying attention :D btw, should be there by monday. Unlike a lot of people in this country I take responsibility for my actions

No hurry, I've got mostly 1 1/4" and only a few 1" that can wait till whenever, but probably in a month or two :D and then if you still need it just let me know because I still might not be ready
Thats the problem with the community tools, they get lost or grow legs  usually by no intention of the one doing it. Blame it on the CRS

Got the flaring tool JM, thanks 8) I've probably had it a few days, only go to the mailbox about once a week

Seth, how soon do you need it? I wouldn't flare the tubes in place until after the boat is painted inside and out.

In that case, I probably don't need it to quickly. Maybe another month or so before the exterior painting occurs.

Scratch that...I won't be needing the flaring tool. I bought garboard drains instead.

CL, just so you don't forget me, I could be as close as a month for needing the flaring tool back. If you need it longer just let me know and I'll work around it.
