hull flipping help in plans?

in plans for C21, Maia24, GV17, S22, are there detailed instructions or suggestions for flipping the hull? i´m looking for really detailed instructions or descriptions for flipping, preferably using bolts or something at bow and transom to turn the hull on it´s centerline/longitudinal axis. Either that or heavy straps slung from above the boat?

John, 2 or 3 people should be able to flip the GV17 hull with no problem at all. There are several posts on the board describing how different boats were flipped. For the big boats, looks like you are going to have to throw a beer & pizza party. Why are you asking about the GV17? You were all hot to trot on the OB17 when it came out. Hi RW, when I compared all the specifications and materials for OB17 and GV17, I found that the GV17 gave me more deck and higher displacement. Maybe it has a little more beam too. The OB17 looks like a great boat, but since it ends up using similar amounts of materials as GV17, no reason not to choose the GV17. I wrongly assumed that the OB17 would just be wider and not take but a little more plywood.<BR><BR><font size=1>[ This message was edited by: Skydad on 26-08-2002 09:58 ]</font>

John I am Building the OD 18. I am going to do as skydad described and throw a hull flipping party. With the OD 18 you need to do two flips...I have gotten it down to one small flip and then a big one. I feel that the more people I have there to help the less chance that it´ll get damaged. Yet as I am building it I can see how strong this structure is but I´de rather have too many people than not enough.

BTW, we mention the hull flipping, list precautions and include some instructions in our plans for larger boats. The bottom line is to have a stiff structure before you turn it over: we mention to leave the molds in or clamp spreaders acorss and if possible, to install the rubrail before rolling the hull over. We should never roll the hull on a weak side panel with no interior reinforcements.<BR>The rest is common sense and almost any method is valid: from a group of friends to hiring a tow truck for half an hour.<BR>I remember rolling 40´ hulls over all by myself with a jack and some old tires.

I rolled my HM-18/19 alone, first roll I didnt even have to touch the boat, The boat was completly tabbed to sole, and frames in place with rub rails, but not decking(didnt want to break it) I put a large heavy duty strap around it, i also drilled two holes thru the double part of the upperhull, so the boat wouldnt spin, then i set old tires on the 4x4´s i was using to let it slide on, I tied a rope around a branch of a large tree close by, but I also feel I could have pulled it over with my truck just as easy, on the other side I had another vehicle, but a come along would work also, this one was attached to a rope that went under the boat and tied to a hole on the other side of the boat, to pull the side under the boat as it came over the top, took about 5 mins, the flip back was even faster but i had to get out and push it over the apex, one handed over hand push. I had tons of onlookers and felt that I only trust my boat to me, and didnt want anybody getting hurt.<BR><BR>Jack
