FS 17 First build

Post by designlady »

Hi Guys, Finally had a few minutes to start a thread for our FS17 before she hits the water! A more condensed and orderly version than in our gallery. Enjoy!

Cut, glued and clamped the stringers
Image

Built the jig with stringers installed, started stiching panels. Thought using PVC idea from Shines Low Sheer worked great-lined up the corners really well.

All seams taped and primed the whole hull. Getting ready to wet out the glass on the hull.

Glassed hull and found out later that it is much easier down the line to cut off the excess rather than overlap to much-as we did!
Fairing the hull isn't easy, especially when you get sloppy with the glass work. Thought we did a pretty good job until we started fairing.

seem to be out of room on this post window, so will submit and keep going.

Back again! Put on micro balloons and built strakes out of silica, milled fibers and 1/2 in strands. Got the tip from Cracker Larry! Used an angle and worked great!

Putting on quickfair. After we put on Hi-build and finally put on a guide coat we sanded most of it off! Live and learn!

4 coats of high build later, which also came off with the fairing, after we put on the quide coat.

2 coats of Blue Water primer followed by 2 coats of Blue Water Mega Gloss-color is Sky Blue. Used a $40. gun from HF after a bit of practice. Great color, but maybe you get what you pay for! Came out with a little orange peel. Will probably opt for Sterling on our next build.

Cradle built and flipped her over. That's where we stand now!

Open the tip just a little will let more paint come out, also may be shooting with the air pressure a little high. practice on a piece of scrap plywood or card board and adjust the gun accordingly will help the flow cover better and not orange peel. :D

Not much time for building lately. Linda got a job :D and I'm trying to finish one in Ft Lauderdale. I'm hoping to have a few weeks before the next one starts and get some work in on it. Probably won't have it done before the meet at Boca. :(
We did find time to tape the inside seams the other day. Hope to do the inside glass this weekend if it's not to dang hot. Been awfull hot and dry down here lately.

Also found time to wet a line with the kids. Julia caught this little redfish off the dock. I love fishing with kids, they get so excited.

That's it for now.

Clean taping job Willie and Linda. Nice little catch too. Size doesn't matter too much when you're that age; it's just all about the tug on the end of the line :D
