Plywood costs

Post by fishingdan »

I am just starting to look at plywood prices. What is a good price for Marine fir? Does anyone have any suppliers in the Northeast (I believe Boulter Plywood is listed in the plans)?

What about okoume?

I am putting together my boat budget and and I am looking for realistic numbers for plywood. I have already seen wide variances in pricing.

Thanks,
Dan

Dan I live in Danvers MA . I used Wakefield lumber for all the marine ply I bought. They get the Plumb Creek ply and it is outstanding plywood. They had the best prices around . I did look at a place in maine that had prices as good yet they were awfully far and they had shipping charges that were a bit much.

Edward,
Thanks for that information. I will call them.

I noticed on another thread that you are building an OD18. I am still deciding between the OB17 and the OD18. I have spent the last week comparing what I believe to be the total cost of building both boats. I was somewhat suprised that my estimates for each boat are within a couple hundred dollars. I really like lines of the OD18. I also find the OB17´s v-hull appealing. Where do you plan to use your boat? We should keep in touch. I won´t be far behind you once I select one.

Thanks again,
Dan

Dan

[ This message was edited by: fishingdan on 27-09-2002 22:32 ]

Hi Dan and Edward,

Did either of you try Boulter Plywood- www.boulterplywood.com in Somerville? They show a bunch of Marine and AA exterior plywoods on their site. Just curious about their cost, service and shipping costs, etc.

-Dave
in Lunenburg, MA

I did try Boulter ply. They were a bit more expensive and farther away from me. I remember the guy that I spoke with was not helpful at all and that really turned me off.
Dan: I am going to be using the boat around Cape Ann. I have access to the ocean right in front of my house. I picked the OD 18 because there are alot of tidal areas around me that get very shallow and I can get into them in a boat that drafts less than 1´. I have always had a flat bottomed boats and I love them. They are as stable as a dock at rest and are a great fishing platform. When on plane they are mostly out of the water...I think they are faster but I could be wrong. They do beat you up alot if you are runnning thought a choppy sea...but that is a trade-off. The OD 18 is a classic shape and just what I wanted. I do see the appeal of the OB 17 and I may have built it if the plans were available when I was planning. I still wanted a boat that was going to draft a very small ammount of water so I can fish anywhere anytime.

I called Boulter a couple of days ago. My first reaction is that the prices were high for Marine Fir A/B, but I have just started looking. I left the prices at work, but I will post them tomorrow. Let me know what you think. I would prefer to buy in MA and save shipping and packing charges.

Boulter pricing for 4x8 Marine Fir A/B:
1/4 - $43
3/8 - $55
1/2 - $59
3/4 - $79

Edward, I have only been to the Cape Ann area a few times in the 10 years I have lived in MA. It is a great area. The more I think about it, the more I find myself considering the OD18 for all of the reasons that you noted. Additionally, it looks easier to build than the OB17. I´ll decide soon. I want to be ready for spring.

Thanks again and keep us posted of your progress.

-
Dan Hehn

[ This message was edited by: fishingdan on 02-10-2002 11:19 ]
