GV11 various questions

Post by anonymous »

I've done some reading on the forums, and have collected a fair amount of good info, and decided that the gv11 is probably the best hull for me. I do have a couple of questions though before I jump in:

1. I have a mercury 2 cycle 15" 6 HP motor. This boat will usually be just me and a bit of stuff, initially at least. I go about 180lb, and the motor runs about 70lb or so, then add fuel, no more than 50 lbs, for a total of 300lbs cargo and a 110lb boat. I'm planning on keeping with the default design and keeping it as light as possible. I've seen a lot of numbers with 9.9s and 10s and 15s, but not much with a 5 or 6 HP. Has it been tested with one as far as planing goes?

2. Will a cavitation plate really help with such a small outboard?

3. Anyone ever heard of or tried Bondo Marine epoxy resin? I know they sell it bulk to shops, and i figure it is probably a re-label of someone else's resin.

1. I tested a fir plywood (slightly heavier than okoume) prototype with a 4 stroke 6 HP motor. I would plane with me, and I weigh about 220 lbs. So I think your lighter weight and lighter engine would plane o.k.

2. The cavitation plates do help with overloaded dinghies or ones without a lot of planing area but a GV11 with one person doesn't qualify! They provide good lift with low drag due to their hydrofoil shape

3. I've seen Bondo Marine epoxy - and it wasn't very cheap in larger sizes. Only ever seen in it in quart sizes and smaller. The S3 stuff or other good marine resin is probably similar in price and is well tested. Considering the overall cost of the boat, skimping on the epoxy isn't the place to do it.

GV11 power

Post by ausie »

Adam,
As you have probably already looked at my GV11 site, you know what to expect in performance from various motors....but I feel you would be a lot happier with your GV11 if you sold it & bought a 10hp motor....my old '83 merc 9.8 gets it going easily, but the few extra horses also mean the motor is working at a lower power setting than a less powerful one which would have to be at a higher throttle setting to do the same job....being a merc, your motor probably weighs the same as a 10 anyhow!...just a thought .You have shown good taste & good sense in selecting the GV11...she's a great little surprise package.

Actually, I missed your site. I'd love to see it.

I'll probably go ahead and build the boat, and upgrade my outboard to a 9.9 or 15 later, but I got this 6HP Merc for $400 US, and it's a 1994 model in great condition, with fairly low hours, and it's a 2 cylinder inline motor, so it probably has a little more power than it is rated at. It was too good a deal to pass on. Hopefully, If I use the right light weight materials, I can get reasonable performance out of it until I can upgrade. I could always build or buy a flat bottom 12' jonboat, but while it might plane a little easier, I doubt it would be nearly as versatile of a boat as a GV11. Yup, I think I'll go with the real deal as far as wood an epoxy go.

Another question: Would using 4mm marine with a thicker outter hull layer of cloth and resin be stronger and about the same weight as 6mm fir with just a resin and paint outter layer? Would it even be lighter or have adequate strength? I know I'm asking detailed questions, but I want to get it right the first time, with the budget I have.

Adam,my pictures & comments are listed in the 'journal' under 'aussie'...but I just checked it & the pictures seem to have dissappeared...try it at your end....maybe Fritz knows where they went!Otherwise I can email them to you ...contact me through private messages & give me you email address & I can refer you to all the other sites of GV11 builders that you may not know of.

On your last question re 4mm ply covered with glass instead of 6mm ply,I'm sure Evan will tell you it is not an option. The finished boat even with the outside completely covered with 8oz cloth over 6mm ply is not heavy compared to similar sized tinnies & glass boats...it's easy to get onto/off the trailer & tows easily so don't get too concerned with finished weight...some builders put lots of extras in thei boats & have not reported any significant loss of performance. My boat which is a little heavier than others easily gets up & planes, with 2 up + all our gear,at no more than 3/4 throttle with my '83 10hp merc & bent prop!(gunna get reconditioned soon).

Ausie-

I am also very interested in building the GV11. If you could post the extended list of GV11 websites, I'd be very grateful.

For the bottom ply, you should stay with the 6mm per the plans. If you want to make it as light as possible, use Okume marine ply and keep your fillets small and even (epoxy is heavy).

FG cloth on the bottom is an option and is not required for the basic hull. Evan has said it would not contribute significantly to the strength but would add a measure of abrasion resistance. However, it would also increase the weight and require more time / effort to fair the bottom.
