Hi,

I´m hoping Jacques can answer this question for me about frames on the GV17. Do you cut the uprights off frames C & D, install the sole and then install the uprights on top of the sole? Likewise, do you cut sides of motor well and Bulkhead E at the sole line and then install the top parts after sole installation? Perhaps you notch the sole panels to go around the uprights? I´ve reviewed my plans several times to find a difinitive answer, but two drawings seem to contradict eachother.

-Dave P

Hey Dave, Check on page 5 of the Garvey 17 building notes about 2/3 the way down the page right after the last highlighted paragraph. Looks like they are cut in two parts.

Hi Richard,

Thanks. I see the instructions for C & D and that´s clear, but the paragraph before the highlight states that Bulkhead E is a full size bulkhead. Later, the directions state that the sole should run to the transom. On the drawings (Frames) most other frames show a thick line where they are to be separated into gunwale support knee and sole support framing. The E Bulkead only has a single thin line through it. Also, the motorwells don´t show any line through them except where the motowell bottom should go- the angle of the motorwell bottom when placed between the sides. So my question is, do Bulkhead E and the motorwell sides get cut to support the sole as well?

I just want to make sure before I screw it up.

Thanks.

-Dave P

Look at the construction drawing, profile section: you´ll see how the sole goes all the way to the transom. Also see note 16, same drawing.
During the assembly, we 1st cut the whole mold E as shown on the stations drawing. We build the hull skin and later, remove the molds. After fiberglassing the inside, we cut the molds into floor frames, upright frames, bulkheads etc. and re-install them in the boat, in some cases in several pieces.
It is the same piece of plywood used 1st as a mold then later as a frame.
In the case of E, it is 1st a one piece mold then is cut in two pieces: a floor frame and the motorwell bulkhead.
Install floor frames, sole then bulkheads on top.
It may sound complicated but is simple: instead of making a mold and throwing it away then cutting frames and bulkheads, we cut pieces only once, save plywood and labor.

Hi Dave.

If you look at the top of DWG #215/6, where the profile view of the center console layout is depicted, there´s an area denoted by "16" and in the legend below it explains part of the mystery.

Basically, the cockpit sole extends aft of E but only between the motorwell sides and the sides of the boat; the motorwell itself is not penetrated by the cockpit sole. (Those holes on either side of E shown on DWG #215/4 allow for access to the extension of the cockpit sole between E, T and the motorwell sides.)

The only question is whether E is slotted on each side to allow for the cockpit sole to pass through (which appears to be the case in DWG #215/6, judging from the diagonal lines in the edging). But, as you´ve pointed out, it seems that this would´ve been shown in DWG #215/4. There´s a line there, but it needs to include the cockpit sole like B, C and D where the slot would be, giving way to the line that´s there now for contrast (to show it´s a slot, and not a complete cut).

At this point only Jacques can clarify the situation.

Cheers,
David F. Johnson

Hi Jacques.

I was authoring my reply during your posting, I guess, and posted afterwards (not knowing you´d replied). Anyway...

Would it be okay to cut slots on either side of E to accommodate the cockpit sole in this case?

Just curious--thanks for the clarification.

Regards,

David brings up a good point: during the design we changed our mind a few times about extending the sole to the transom under the motorwell or not. Since we had enough plywood, we show it all the way to the transom but it is not 100% necessary. What is necessary is for the sole to extend all the way to the transom under the side lockers. For the part under the motorwell, it will add strength but access to the bilge is easier without it.
We show the sole there but feel free to omit it if you want.

I don´t see one of these icons tipping his hat, so you´ll all have to accept a winker and a sincere "thank you very much".

-Dave P
