Starting HM19 tomorrow...

Post by mikestl »

Hello everyone,

I'm cutting the first pieces for my HM19 tomorrow....the stringers and the 2 layers of the bottom. Any hints from the HM builders?

Thanks,

Mike

Mike:
I started my HM 19 in Sept 2002.... am currently at the "roll over" stage.. I believe that I have used more epoxy/resin than called for (though I also feel like I've sanded off about twice as much as I spread) and think that my version of the HM 19 is a bit portly, much like its maker.... So at present I am cuttting out all the remaining plywood pieces (and boy am I glad that I bought all that wood last year with the current sharp rise in lumber costs)... at the same time I'm trying to decide how best to roll over the beast---pleading and treats isn't helping any more than with our dumb cat. Since I build the HM in the carport, I'm thinking about using the subfl ooring rafters from the ceiling as hoists, and then swing/ease her over slowly... not being a devotee of my building skills, my wife has become a bit hesitant, no read that down right belligerant in my bright idea... she seems to continually recall/remind me of the 5 gallon epoxy spillage in her sewing room last winter (an unfortunate occurance that happened while she was away, and something doubly unfortunate because it was something that I couldn't just sweep under the rug before her return...)..... However, any/all misadventures apart, welcome to the HM club of bateau.... It's a great looking boat, especially as the days pass and it take more shape as a boat worth your time, efforts, and monies... JackG, Ralph and several others have/are working on the HM..
Jack has even been lucky enought to have finished and been in the water fishing.... Check out his photo album site, very good pics.... I have only a few suggestions for the maintaince of your sanity during your adventure: 1) If married, don't forget to treat you wife with special care and loving, for a wife jealous of a boat is indeed a demond from Hades, 2) unless you've built before, make a model of the boat in cardboard or balsa, you'll save yourself a lot of mistakes/hassles in the future, 3) get a good pair or two of work gloves, 4) lay down an area of plastic before building to collect all of the spillage, rather than letting the carport collect the spillage, 5) measure two or three times before cutting, certainly saves on the wood, 6) and most of all relax and enjoy it because before too long it will have taken shape.... the shape you gave it....
Well, not being know for long-windedness, I think that you are about to embark on a most interesting trip....
Have fun, and keep us all posted with your efforts...
A fellow HMer...

First steps...

Post by mikestl »

Hey guys...Thanks for the tips...got the stringers built with temp. braces, and traced and cut out 1/2 of the first layer of the bottom. As far as posting pictures goes, do I have to have a web site to point the "image" tag to? It seems as though I should be able to attach a photo like with regular email...

Thanks,

Mike
