CK17 - Attaching Seat Tops

Post by MikeM »

My question regards the recommended way to attach the seat tops to the sides of the hull of the CK17. Right now, I´m planning on gluing a few small cleats along the side of the hull for each seat top to rest on. The gap between the seat and the hull side would be filled in with putty (epoxy & filler) and overlayed with fiberglass tape. Is this sufficient or do you recommend running a cleat along the entire length of the seat-hull boundary?

What you describe is exactly what we expect: small cleats along the hull sides, bevel filled with epoxy putty the tape on top.

[ This message was edited by: jacquesmm on 09-10-2002 15:45 ]

Mike,

I just ordered the plans for the CK17 and would be very interested in hearing how your progress goes. I built the V12 and learned a lot from that process. Look forward to getting started on the CK17.

On the V12 seats I used full length cleats and did not glass the seams, just a fillet. I was hoping I could do the same with the CK17.

Just saw Jacques reply to your message so I guess I will plan on small cleats and glassing the seams

PJ,

I have pretty much completed the assembly of the hull, frames, daggerboard case, stringers, etc. The plans are very good and very accurate. Unfortunately, I have had to slow down construction the last couple of months due to other priorities. Now that the cold weather is approaching in Pennsylvania I´m sure that my wife would like to park the car in the garage again!

I can´t say how she sails since I probably won´t get her in the water until Spring. My only previous sailing experience has been with a larger boat (a 24 ft sloop) with a fixed keel fin. Nonetheless, I am excited and have very positive expectations for this boat. The CK17 has all the makings of a great day sailer with a large carrying capacity for her size.

This is my first experience building a boat. I´m glad I chose this boat and I wouldn´t hesitate to make the same decision again. The more I work on the boat the more respect I gain for the designer. I don´t know of anybody who has completed a CK17 yet, maybe I´ll be the first. I´ll try to post some pictures of the progress to date.

Good luck with your project.

Mike

Paul,

If it turns out anywhere near as nice as the V12 that you built, it should be the shown as the model on the CK17 web page. I just had to go back again and look at the V12 pictures, since I´m closer to finishing my V12.

Billy
